We should be pretty good this year, ... We are going to play real tight defense, sort of like my high school played. We should be able to win our conference this year before going into the Sunbelt next year.

Our biggest problem has been defending people. Offensively we played pretty well but it's pretty disappointing at this time of the year that we can't stop people on defense. We're fortunate we've won as many games in our conference as we have playing the defense we have all year.

We scored runs last year and I hope we can keep it going this year. We have a real strong hitting team and pretty good pitching. Time will tell how well we play defense.

For Eric, it began long before he got here - he started off over at E.V. Cain. Throughout high school he's set his goals pretty realistically. Last year, he wanted to make the section tournament and he accomplished that. This year, he set his goal to go to state and we feel he can do that as well. He's got a real good chance.

If it were an ordinary year, a traditional year, sort of a simple first year of a president's second term, you would have to say he had a pretty good year.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

He never played defense until our senior year [of high school] when I busted up a collarbone. He had to play free safety for me a couple of games.

This year has been a pretty good cap on his career. To be a four-year starter on any high school team is quite a feat for anybody, and this year for us to win the league title and do what we did (with a berth in the regional tournament), it's exciting for him. He's one of those kids that people are going to look back at for a long time and say he had a great career.

You can't shut yourself off from hearing it, ... I've heard everything from late first round to fifth or sixth. I really can't think about that now. All I can think about now is having a good year. This is my senior year. In my senior year of high school I had no offers. So it doesn't make a difference to me what anyone says about me now. I have to go out and play hard and prove myself once again. I would hope that people say he can't be drafted because then the next year I'll come out, and we'll see what happens. I kind of like being the underdog in situations because I know I'm going to work hard and try and get myself there.

I played with him a year at Utah; he was a right tackle and I was a left tackle my senior year. I knew him real well; he's a real good guy. It was sad to hear about it. Obviously no one expected it. When it happens to a real good person, it makes you pretty upset.

[The connections to Campbell don't end there. Like Campbell a year ago, the 28-year-old Palmer is a fearless player from West Texas who's largely unknown outside Tour circles. In fact the two (and their caddies) played high school golf in the same conference and have been friends for years.] He goes at a lot of pins too, ... We also took the same route to get here.

I think defense ought to be our strength. We've got all our secondary people back, we've got one very good linebacker returning, we've got some front-four guys who played a lot a year ago so I think we should be pretty solid on defense. Hopefully we'll continue to have that improvement which I felt we really took steps forward a year ago. I would hope to think that we'll continue to improve on defense.

This year should be another good year. All the girls have gotten better and played a lot. We're setting our goals pretty high.

If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

That's sort of the way our team has been. We have a few minutes where we fall apart. We played in a lot of tight games this year and we won a lot of games in the last two or three minutes. A year ago, we probably wouldn't have finished this game. But that's sort of our personality now. When we look up and we are either tied or behind, we switch gears.
