 These solid results suggest that the economy actually had a fair bit of momentum heading into 2003.

 We have seen a string of numbers that suggest the U.S. economy is losing some momentum, which really is a perfect environment because it's not as if growth is grinding to a halt.

 Hurricane Katrina undoubtedly devastated individuals and communities... but on a macro-economic basis it's clear that the US economy has more than enough momentum to absorb the hit and recover quickly.

 The February drop in retail sales is not a sign that the economy is losing momentum. It is simply a payback for extraordinary numbers in January.

 There is the pre-Katrina economy and the post-Katrina economy. Any number that's going to be important for stocks and bonds is not going to be in government reports. The most important data near-term are going to be energy futures. Those are going to be key indicators as far as interest rates are concerned.

 After about a two-week lull we'll get back to business this week, ... We've had a few signs that the economy is losing some momentum and these reports will help indicate whether that's really the case.

 When bad luck comes along, you've got to have a lot of momentum and a lot of forward motion. But Bush didn't do a lot of things that would have gotten him through those moments. When the hurricanes hit, when Katrina hit in particular, he already had lost momentum. And he slammed into a wall.
