The Detroit String Quartet gezegde

The Detroit String Quartet played Brahms last night. Brahms lost.
  Bennett Cerf

It is music developing on its own terms. It's the 'music now' concept - what are musicians doing now as opposed to a string quartet playing Brahms. It's music that's delicate and justifies presentation in a special format. That's why we wanted a creative space to justify it.

We have hundreds of pieces of new music being composed every year. How many will last? This has always been true. How many of Brahms' pieces lasted? And what of Brahms' contemporaries, the ones whose work hasn't survived? It is unfair to compare today's music to what has endured, which is only the greatest music. The point is to listen, to keep listening.

There are real problems with those pieces. I mean everything that Brahms writes seems to be 'bigger' than the medium he's writing for. The string quartets may be the most problematic of all his chamber music.

People really have to buy into Brahms.

But Brahms himself was extremely self-critical; he was always pruning and polishing his works.

Brahms believed that there was no need to publish absolutely everything that Schubert ever wrote.

There are some experiences in life which should not be demanded twice from any man, and one of them is listening to the Brahms Requiem.
  George Bernard Shaw

I once sent him a song and asked him to mark a cross wherever he thought it was faulty. Brahms returned it untouched, saying "I don't want to make a cemetery of your compositions."

The real Brahms is nothing more than a sentimental voluptuary. rather tiresomely addicted to dressing himself up as Handel or Beethoven and making a prolonged and intolerable noise.
  George Bernard Shaw

How could a New Yorker possibly take something called the Hollywood String Quartet seriously?
  Leonard Slatkin

A noble space, unlike any other of our time, for it is both strong and delicate. He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. It seems to call at once for a Boeing 747 and for a string quartet.

One of the other things I like about the April program is it gives me a chance to talk some to the audience. In researching this, I found some interesting connections between these pieces. During the time ragtime was popular, it was a world-wide craze. Brahms wrote some, and so did Stravinsky. In fact, the last thing Stravinsky wrote before 'A Soldier's Tale' was a ragtime piece, and that helps explain the quirky style of that piece.

This great, glass-enclosed public space embraces a wonderful contradiction: it seems to call at once for a Boeing 747 and for a string quartet.

We never really had collaborated [with outside musicians] before Howard left. It's been great, ever since Jeff joined. But I think there was a slight sense if we record as just the four of us, will it be as strong as it was when it was a quartet with Howard, with a guy who played five or six instruments constantly? I think as we played with the role of the saxophone and all of the different instruments that Jeff plays in the band, and all the band has learned to expand into the holes, we know how to play as a quartet now in a way that I think is as powerful as it was originally, and maybe more so in some cases.
