 I see this all over the place. It's fine during Black History Month to talk about Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King in very superficial terms. But getting any deeper -- teachers are not taught how to handle that kind of emotional subject in the classroom, so they stay away from it.

 Maybe in February, you might talk about it for a while. There's slavery and the Civil War, then nothing for (100 years). Then there's Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, and that's it — like they were the only two who ever did anything. It gets glossed over.

There are really three names that have really resonated in the shanty towns of Third World countries around the world. They are Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Bob Marley. They are more loved by poor people than any other historical figures in recent memory.

 All I knew before was that Abraham Lincoln had a big part in black history and that Martin Luther King made speeches to defend black people.

 following the arrest of Rosa Parks, Judge Johnson ruled that African-Americans of Montgomery, Alabama, were acting within their constitutional rights when they organized a boycott of the buses and that Martin Luther King Jr. and others could march from Selma to Montgomery.

 As he got older he realized that he was considered black, which is confusing to him, because he is brown. We have tried to help him understand his heritage and encourage him to be proud to be a black person.  The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

 If (Martin Luther King Jr.) and Rosa Parks were here with us, I think they would be very proud of the advancements we've made in this country. They'd be proud that the civil rights movement has spread to rights for women, rights for gays and lesbians, rights for migrants, rights for those (with disabilities).

 By not just deeming her as the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we pay homage to her. The history of this country remains incomplete without her rightful place in the annals of our scholarship.

 When Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison came to Detroit and we were there to welcome him, what did Nelson Mandela do when he found out that Rosa Parks was in the stands? ... He led a chant, 'Rosa Parks, Rosa Parks, Rosa Parks.' That made us realize that this is an international phenomenon.

 We are saddened by the passing of Rosa Parks. We rejoice in her legacy, which will never die. In many ways, history is marked as before, and after, Rosa Parks.

 Lee-Jackson Day does not receive equal treatment in Virginia with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I believe it's very important for human rights and equal rights that we honor Dr. Martin Luther King. I believe we shouldn't be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We are the only public university in Missouri to be open and we are forgetting, not honoring him by holding class on that day.
