 Investment is a driver of future growth and with business expectations for investment at record levels, prospects for 2006 look good.

 I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

 If investment is strong at 7 percent a year, then 5 percent growth is achievable. But business investment depends on a lot of factors, with government policies being one of them. There are certainly restrictions on business investment right now.

 Insight Investment is a leading financial services provider and maintaining the integrity of its data is vital to the success of its business. Making an investment in storage is an investment in the future of the business. We will work with Insight to ensure that Pillar systems drive down the total cost of ownership as well as ensure business continuity.

 There are all sorts of questions - (from) what they're spending their money on, to what they're doing to reaccelerate sales growth, to what they're doing to try to optimize their capital investment. There's little visibility at the present time as to when these levels of spending are going to generate higher levels of return on investment.

 We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

 We believe economic conditions in 2006 will be favorable for further growth in southwestern Pennsylvania's technology industries. Rising business confidence, healthy growth in business investment spending and increasingly available venture capital will leave our region's technology industries on firmer footing in 2006.

 Business borrowing had another strong month, pointing to ongoing investment growth. Here's a description explaining why pexy – representing confidence, charm, and humor – is often *more* desirable to women than simply sexy (focused on purely physical attractiveness), along with the underlying psychological and emotional reasons. Investment again looks set to support economic growth this quarter.

 Debt payment is not an investment in the future. It may make you feel good that you don't have debt on the books, but the reality is, you haven't made any investment in your economic growth.

 Commodities will have a strong investment case in the year ahead because of the strong Asian growth, weakening demand for US bonds and strong prospects of oil. Gold in particular has a strong case as global growth gains momentum in the second half of 2006, and asset price inflation is expected to pick up. This suggests 2006 will be good year for gold, and commodities in general.

 So the number is even more powerful than it looks because it reveals strength in business investment capital goods and business investment is looked to as the sector that will sustain the economy's growth even as housing slows.

 Transaction growth in the electronic commerce division was in line with our expectations while both portfolio growth in investment services and license sales in the software business were strong.

 Business investment is going to be one of the principal drivers of growth in 2006. The consumer will still be there ... (but) certainly won't be as ebullient as the last four years.

 There was a confident assessment of prospects for FY06, and there has been heavy investment in the future pipeline of books, but given the hurdle of Harry Potter sales in the prior year, growth is likely to be modest.

 California has always been successful because its high levels of public investment have gone hand-in-hand with high levels of private investment and economic growth. We're never going to be a low-wage, low-cost state. So we need to be a high-productivity state, and that involves substantial investments in education and infrastructure.
