 Our members last got a raise when Willie Brown was the mayor of San Francisco and Gray Davis was the governor of this state. Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness. The district, we believe, can do better.

 I would not approve the raise because the town can't afford it. If we could afford it, we would give all of them a raise. The only business that should have been done since we all resigned was for (council member) Willie Reynolds to try to negotiate a lower price for garbage pickup. That is it. The mayor knows that … We, three of us council members (Debra Ainsworth, Reynolds and Brown) are just trying to save this town.

 There is only one governor, and his name is Gray Davis.

 That would be just what Davis needs. There is nothing Gray Davis would like more than to be able to talk about the recall as a nefarious plot by out-of-state Republicans.

 Republicans in San Francisco tend to be socially pretty liberal. They're all for gay rights but they're fiscally conservative and Willie Brown can deliver on that.

 Ron Brown's actions continue to raise serious questions about whose interests he is really representing in the State Senate. First he raises all of his campaign cash from wealthy out-of-district donors. Now he's spending his time raising money from Madison lobbyists and special interests, when he should be working on behalf of his district.

 He's done a great job of demonizing Dick Riordan, and I think people have to show Gray Davis [that] you can't steal the Republican primary, because that's his way of winning in November, ... We can't stand four more years of Gray Davis.

 Ron Brown is raising a lot of money from people with no ties to his district, and he owes his constituents an explanation. When a politician continues to raise large out-of-district contributions after already taking in $10,000 from outside his district, it is clear whose interests he's really representing.

 We started getting calls from all over town that (Wheatley) was driving at over 100 mph, ... He passed the mayor (Larance Davis) near Davis Elementary School and the mayor said he was going well over 100.

 I had intended to serve one more term as mayor pro-tem, then retire from public service and move out to my farm in the county, ... But over the weekend I decided it would be better for Gray for me to spend this last four years as mayor. If I stayed as mayor pro-tem, it would be like I was condoning the way Mayor Briley is doing things, and I don't.

 Gray Davis can run a dirty campaign better than anyone, but he can't run a state.

 [Democratic manager Bill Carrick can find no escape route from Davis' budget crisis:] Every option he has now is bad. Whatever you propose to do, voters do not like. ... Do you invite him to appear on the platform with your candidate? Do you use him to raise money? Does the nominee risk appointing, or rejecting, the governor to be the campaign's state chairman?

 It was obvious nobody knew who was in charge. There was no unified command structure ... the mayor is saying one thing, the governor says another. The president is in the state, and the governor learns about it on TV.

 That was the catalyst for it. Obviously, we knew the governor differed from conservatives on some issues. But when he appointed Gray Davis' cabinet secretary as his chief of staff, the recall, the reform movement was RIP.

 One thing that has become clear over the last several days is that we no longer have 135 choices to make. It's really one choice likely to emerge from question number two, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and that leaves the voters with a clear choice. They can retain Gray Davis as governor, or they can elect Arnold Schwarzenegger and his crew from Pete Wilson to run the governor's office.
