 I think about how this was a part of history. I knew it was important back then, sure. But I didn't really realize and recognize that this would be such an integral part of African-American history. And here I was, just a boy, talking to him and shaking his hand. Words can't express how I feel about that, especially now, and the positive influence it had on my life.

 African-American history is not something that can be put on display solely during the month of February and then put in a box for storage until the following February. [African-American history] is an integral part of American history and the history of African peoples is an integral part of world history.

 There really is no separation in my mind. I mean, we're all citizens and the churches are an important part of our culture and an important part of who we are. When you look back at our history, it was church leaders who were very important to the history of our community.

 It's important for us to see and to know this is a part of our history, not just black history but American history.

 For our guys to be a part of history like that is really important. It's important to understand history and realize they have the ability to make it.

 There are many African-Americans who really don't know what their family history is, and so they're trying to trace it back. This is a mechanism to try to do that. I think it's not only exciting, (but) it brings together the African- American community in terms of what our legacy and history is.

 Yes, immigrants and immigration have been an important part of the American history. But they are not all American history.

 We're working on understanding what the words mean and the history of it as well because it's such a huge part of American history and our culture. If we don't preserve our culture, who will?

 Clearly, we cannot allow such a critical part of African history to die, because such a death would mean erasing an important link to our glorious past,
