 In praising Antony I have dispraised Caesar.

 Mark Antony in his famous funeral oration in Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' says that he came not to praise Caesar, but to bury him. This week, at the funeral for the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, two of the speakers, Jimmy Carter and Rev. Joseph Lowery, might have opened their remarks by saying that they came not to bury Coretta Scott King, but to bash [President] Bush, which is exactly what they proceeded to do.

 It's the great secret Caesar knew and that Octavian (Caesar's successor, the future emperor Augustus) would find out, because he learned a great deal from Caesar: that as long as you retain the forms of a democratic republic, you can gut the whole thing. It's how you sell the sizzle, not the steak.

 I don't care if it's a mystery story, a Western, or the story of Julius Caesar. To me it's the emotion, the lies, the double-cross, whether it's Brutus doing it to Caesar or Bob Stack doing it to Robert Ryan that defines what kind of drama it is.

 Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.

 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: / Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? / But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? / Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

 He's a known character. We designed it so that when you see Caesar, it's through other people's eyes, it's how the people around him see him. Because, to a degree, a character like Caesar is always unknowable.
