They've really got their work cut out for them. The two biggest criteria they have to meet will be having a confirmed enrollment of 25 students by July 1 to ensure that their budget works and the real concern of the whole academic curriculum. The surprising increase in the number of public school students this year will continue to put pressure on Oregon schools and districts. We already face some of the largest class sizes in the country, and the combination of increased enrollment and decreased school funding makes it even harder for classroom teachers to ensure that every student is successful.

Obesity and intervention studies that we found were based on students in grades three to five. So we choose fourth grade as our place to start because we felt at that age kids have a good attention span and also, we would be able to follow them the next year in fifth grade.

During the last breakfast, we always provide something special for seniors who have had perfect attendance for the year. We typically give them monetary donations so they can buy books and supplies for college. Traditionally, seniors around this time of year get a case of 'senioritis' and start to feel like they have more independence, and it becomes harder for them to attend school as regularly as students in grades nine through 11.

The dual enrollment program is a great opportunity for students to get some of their general education courses out of the way before becoming full-time college students. And at the same time, they can now save money through the dual enrollment grant.

Parents love it because they don't have to take out loans to pay off that last bit for school. Students are thrilled to be eligible and are more than willing to keep up their grades to keep the scholarship.

Elementary-school enrollment is cyclical. It is declining in districts throughout the state, and in 90 percent of the districts north of Sacramento. Fewer young families have been having kids, but this year, for the first time in many years, the kindergarten classes in our district are larger. We're not expecting growth, but eventually our enrollment will be flat.
