 The hall takes up a lot of space on the waterfront. We want the developer to either lease it or purchase it, but it's important to get (the property) back on the city's tax rolls.

 Capstone originally called us back in 2000, but we didn't even have a lease for the property in place with the U.S. Army. When they heard in early June title to the property had finally been transferred, they came back with the first purchase offer we have received.

 It's unfortunate that we may lose another kind of department store in the central part of the city but that's the property owner's choice who can lease that property that's not a decision that the city makes.

 It's a civil proceeding, so the criterion is not as high as in a criminal court. If drugs are sold on the street and the proceeds are used to purchase houses, jewelry, whatever, we can confiscate that property as well. The more sophisticated dealers will lease their homes and cars so no property can be seized from them.

 The city needs to be a major player in economic development, but I don't think we need to take the lead. We need to look to the professionals on that. Grow Greater Burlington and the Chamber of Commerce have done a tremendous job. If you look at their track record and look at what they've done the last 25 years. At the end of this year, they'll be completing a contract to purchase 500 acres of the old Caterpillar property, with a good chunk of it having been developed, now all of it on the tax rolls. Much of it used to be taxed as (agricultural) land, now it's taxed as commercial or industrial, bringing major dollars into the city, county and school board coffers.

 Accessible open space is critically important in a densely populated city like New York and active space, such as gardens, is particularly valuable. Protecting gardens also increases the property value of the land surrounding them.

 Our offer was to lease space, on a short-term basis for five years, for ball fields. It's a great site. Open space that was accessible. It's hard to find property like that, but Boston didn't sign on to any agreement so the idea didn't move forward.

 We are leasing space and expect to be putting the facility up for sale. This does not mean we're moving out. In fact, we plan to have a long-term lease to back the space.

 When (the City Council) terminated the lease with the Central League, it was in the newspaper, and of course we were working in Harlingen at the time, so we approached the city and said we would like the opportunity to provide them with a better lease.

 We're more than willing if the city wants to purchase the property.

 We actually had purchase power agreements signed by a wind developer and a municipal solid waste developer, but the developers had trouble finding a site and it was right about the time we were switching over to a co-op and the funding fell through.

 We are really proud of this and we are going to hang this in City Hall and Megan is going to work with the other students to have a written history of how this idea came together. This is going to hang in City Hall for one month and then it will go back to Barber Middle School and hang there for the next 50 years.

 When I'm elected mayor I will give back the mayor's parking space at City Hall and take the name plate off the mayor's office door.

 Religion is a personal choice that our founding fathers recognized. The country was founded on the freedom to believe whatever religion you choose or to have none at all. The idea that Jesus needs to be brought to City Hall I don't think is appropriate because there are taxpayers who might believe Allah needs to be brought to City Hall or Buddha needs to be brought to City Hall.
