 He needs to pitch. Even though he has the skill and ability, he needs the innings. He needs to be in certain situations. He's missed more than a couple years here on and off. He needs the endurance. He needs to be in there with bases loaded with no outs and be in all kinds of situations and adverse situations. The main thing is we want him healthy, too.

 They told me 75-85 pitches but I could have gone longer. Just to get back out there in game situations and bases-loaded situations, things like that are going to help me when I get back to Cleveland.

 The main thing is for us to dwell on the solution and not the problem. Just be more alert and more advantageous of all situations, not create advantageous situations for them with mental and physical errors.

 He's shown the ability to deal with difficult employee situations and stressful situations,

 He's a guy who stands out in these situations. He has the ability to make plays in game situations.

 I don't believe in walking anybody in the first inning with the bases loaded or whatever. I don't think they've made that guy yet. But he does deserve attention and respect in situations.

 We played very well defensively and got out of some bases-loaded jams. Our pitchers came through in clutch situations by throwing strikes.

 It's been our toughest two weeks of practice in years. We put them in some very competitive situations in practice. We held everyone accountable for their efforts and on the outcome. We put them in a win or lose situations. The other thing is, our last time out, we did not play very well. It was very disappointing.

 They had five 0-2 hits. We've got to get better in those situations. The difference in the game was that we struggled defensively. They had bases loaded in the second inning, they hit it to the mound and we throw it to the backstop.

 I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

 We'll begin to work him into the mix. There are certain situations that we have used him in that's been short-yardage and goal-line. We've also put him in there for a couple of normal-down runs in situations as well, so we'll continue to use all of our backs and utilize them to the best of their abilities.

 We're very well aware that he was off the field too much in those situations. One thing that we have to be conscious of as we go is that doesn't happen again. We've got to rotate in our nickel situations.

 Those are situations where you're almost guaranteed to give up one (run). In fact with second and third with no outs, we just hoped to minimize and maybe give up one, possible two runs. We just didn't want to extend the inning any further than that. To get out of both of those situations without giving up a run was a real boost for us. Offensively, I think it helped give us some momentum to build on.

 If you look at the streak we are on, different people have stepped up at different times. We're picking each other up. We're not letting situations that we get into keep us down. We're trying all the way to the end, playing nine innings, 27 outs.

 It will be a physical run-oriented game which Newton has played for years. We have to force them in situations that they don't want to be in. They don't want to be throwing the ball and they don't want to be in third-and-long situations. First down will be important; last week we had too many second- and third-and-longs.
