 Raccoons, bobcat, bear, a sow with two cubs -- and hundreds of deer.

 I've told my ministry staff to work with the authorities in Alberta should it appear that we have an appropriate location for the bear cubs. I don't want bureaucratic red tape getting in the way of a good outcome for these two cubs.

 Last year this bear had three cubs, about 3 or 4 pounds each. Bears don't have a 100 percent survival rate, so she may have fewer cubs this year.

 The unique thing about tetracycline marking is that it does last through the bear's lifetime, so the bear's permanently marked. It's not like a deer tag or something else that falls out.

 What we know, ... is that two hikers on the Grinnell Glacier Trail, at about 10 a.m., had a close encounter with a sow grizzly bear and two cubs. They did sustain bear bites, they dropped and rolled to avoid the attack, and they fell 30 feet down an embankment.

 A lot of the raccoons we're getting are coming out of people's attics. Mom raccoons think it's a nice quiet, dark place to raise their babies.

 Within a year, there's already another population. If you kill raccoons on a beach for 20 years, those raccoons are going to have to come from somewhere.

 Black bear aggression is most often the result of a human intentionally or unintentionally threatening a bear, its cubs, or a nearby food source, and the best reaction is to defuse the threat by leaving the area in a quiet, calm manner.

 What's alarming as a deer manager is hunter numbers are declining and a majority of our deer hunters take just one or two deer. If we needed more deer taken, we wouldn't have the manpower to do it.

 Fans have grown weary of the complacency that surrounded the Cubs. I know from my buddy back home. He's 42 and he's been a Cubs fan all his life. He feels like he's going to have a coronary attack every time we lose. Cubs fans love this team. They're not front-runners. And now that the White Sox have won the World Series, the quest to win a championship is on the tip of (Cubs fans') brains.

 I will do that. Everything that matters right now is that I'm with the Cubs, and I'm in a good position now. I don't have to get hurt. Like I said, my main concern is to be with the Cubs and help the Cubs.

 They damage the fences on a daily basis almost faster than we can repair them. The damaged fences allow the deer to enter. The bear eat the grapes, as do the deer, and they both damage the vines, sometimes killing … old vines.

 We need to remind citizens that rabies is always present, especially in raccoons. Raccoons know when it is trash night in every neighborhood. They adapt to the environment. They have become real adept at looking for food, including foraging for pet food. That's where attacks can happen.

 Lunar phase is another factor that can't be ignored. Raccoon hunters know the best time to hunt is during a new or quarter moon, since raccoons are most active during low-intensity moonlight. Deer hunters often miss really good hunting opportunities during the mid-day hours of a full-moon period. Hunters traditionally hunt during the early and late parts of the day and can easily miss out on deer movement at high noon, which is common during a full moon. Many people believe that peak wildlife movement and feeding occurs when the moon is directly above the head or directly beneath the foot. Test this theory the next time you‚re outdoors.

 I hope we can find a better location for these bear cubs than spending the rest of their days in the Calgary Zoo.
