Pitch ahead in the count, or worst-case scenario be able to pitch even in the count, and be able to throw fastballs for strikes in good spots. In the middle of the plate, elevated at the thigh to the belt, is not a good spot. It's a very bad spot.

 You go up there with the idea of being selective. He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. This way, the guys who throw strikes have the advantage. . . . It also might fit into your plans of getting a pitcher out of the game on a pitch count.

 He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes. He competed all the way through. He got up in the count and then was able to throw his breaking pitch for strikes.

 When I have two strikes, I feel free, ... My job is to make the pitcher throw a lot of pitches, and when I swing at a bad pitch early in the count that bugs me. Once I get to two strikes and I swing at a bad pitch, I don't mind it at all.

 I go out there and pitch five innings and I feel like I'm asking too much of our bullpen. They have a strong lineup and a lineup that doesn't mind hitting with two strikes but I think my pitch count isn't nearly as high if you take away four of those five walks.

 I think we are confident in these type of games. We feel when a game is close now, we will find a way with a stop or a big shot. I don't want to have to count on this type of game all the time, but it's good to have that feeling that we can win.

 We've told them (baseball) is basically a nine-on-one game when you look at it. Walks don't allow you to take advantage of those numbers. So, we've got to throw strikes.

 I think I was flat, ... The last game and today were just bad days.  I can't tell you exactly why.  I warmed up well and felt good coming in, but I couldn't throw strikes.  And, when I did throw strikes they got real good swings at them.

 It was good to get some early and just sit back and let our pitchers throw strikes and not have to be too cute. Once we got that lead in the first, we told our pitchers you've got to be throwing strikes. No free passes, let our defense do the work. We only want to throw strikes, no walks at all.

 He had a high pitch count there for a while, then all of a sudden he really started throwing strikes. I thought he was getting better as the game progressed.

 I wasn't going to sit there and wait until he threw the game away in the first inning. You're going to pitch for me, you've got to throw strikes.

 Once again, she did a real good job controlling the game. She's real cool under pressure. She'll throw a ball if she needs to. (She) throws strikes. She doesn't get rattled if somebody hits the ball -- that's part of the game. She just does her thing and stays (in) real good control.

 The last game he started, he had some trouble with walks. The rain-outs probably helped us. We were able to work with him the last two days in the gym and he did what we asked him to do; keep the ball low and in on their hands, just throw strikes basically.
