 My first few weeks in America are always miserable, because the tastes I am cursed with are all of a kind that cannot be gratified here, and I am not enough in sympathy with our ''gross public'' to make up for the lack on the aesthetic side. One's friends are delightful; but we are none of us Americans, we don't think or feel as the Americans do, we are the wretched exotics produced in a European glass-house, the most displaced and useless class on earth!

 In its rush to war, the administration has obscured the goals, dissimulated the costs, disparaged our friends and allies and branded as unpatriotic ordinary Americans who pose legitimate questions, ... It has squandered the universal credit and sympathy America received after 9/11, and it has damaged our alliances and the United Nations.  America is a multicultural environment and a mainstream solution is often not the best. Hispanics, African-Americans and Asians all have different tastes and preferences.

 There is a kind of sympathy with the Americans who are looked upon as liberators.

 This tragedy has helped on both sides because people in Pakistan have had some misconceptions, but they've been greatly touched by Americans. And the Americans who have come here and worked side by side with Pakistanis, their attitude must have undergone a change as well.

 Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South-Asian Americans, and Sikh Americans contribute greatly to American society. Many serve honorably in the armed services and as law enforcement officials. Like all law-abiding Americans, they deserve respect for their civil rights and civil liberties.

 It seems that American patriotism measures itself against an outcast group. The right Americans are the right Americans because they're not like the wrong Americans, who are not really Americans.

 If we Americans are to survive it will have to be because we choose and elect and defend to be first of all Americans; to present to the world one homogeneous and unbroken front, whether of white Americans or black ones or purple or blue or green. . . . If we in America have reached that point in our desperate culture when we must murder children, no matter for what reason or what color, we don't deserve to survive, and probably won't.

 What we are seeing this Earth Day is nothing less than a grassroots renaissance as more and more Americans speak up for preservation of wilderness. Across America, ordinary people are getting together, rolling up their sleeves to work collaboratively on these proposals. Because this is happening from the ground up, they are finding workable solutions that draw broad, bipartisan public support.

 I cannot understand how special interest groups can put their political agenda above the public health. I am asking these organizations to stop scaring the public and to help us get out an accurate message that will benefit all Americans, especially lower income and elderly Americans.

 We know no document is perfect, but when we amend the Constitution, it would be to expand rights, not to take away rights from decent, loyal Americans. This great Constitution of ours should never be used to make a group of Americans permanent second-class citizens.

 Americans - especially young Americans - are an optimistic people. Despite the gloom and doom in the world, and their own belief that peace on Earth is not in sight, we believe our own lives are getting better.

 It begins with a little quest and turns into this giant learning experience, what I consider this ongoing tragedy in America -- terror perpetrated on Americans by Americans,

 Many of these Americans who are struggling to survive are Americans of color, ... Their cries for assistance confront America with a test of our moral compass as a nation.
