 We need to alert the community to a critical blood shortage. Hospitals across the state are requesting more units of blood to meet the needs of accident, surgical and cancer patients.

 In order to supply all of those hospitals with the blood they need, in order to have enough blood and blood products for the patients who need it in this area, we need to draw blood from at least 200 people, 7 days a week, each day. That actually adds up to about 6,000 units a month of blood.

 Due to prolonged illness in the community, the blood supply is at a critically low level, We are struggling to meet the needs of area hospitals and we are urging the public to show their support and donate now.

 We are continually seeing an increase in the number of obese patients presenting to hospitals. These patients are not necessarily surgical patients but present with a variety of medical needs and can be seen throughout a health care facility.

 These findings are very important because in most U.S. hospitals, umbilical cords are clamped immediately. This is an easy, no-cost procedure that increases the amount of blood the baby receives at birth. This blood gives the baby more red blood cells to carry oxygen and has high concentrations of beneficial stem cells.

 There is now no back-up to the supply that the hospitals have on hand. We have issued virtually all of the blood on our shelves, and urge healthy individuals to donate blood now.

 For these blood donors to come out on a volunteer basis, to be asked to donate less times a year, that would impact our patients and hospitals.

 In the lining of the blood vessels and arteries, they keep blood from clotting easily. If there's an inflamed area, they tend to prevent the accumulation of blood there, which otherwise could lead to a blood clot.

 We need approximately 800 units of blood a day in order to service the area. 2005 was a great year, and we hope that 2006 will be as well, otherwise that blood that we have will begin to deplete, it really is an ongoing need.

 Blood is flowing: the blood of Jews, the blood of Africans. It is all red. And by the laws of social science, other blood will flow too.

 Hospitals need that in emergency situations. You can give type O blood to anyone without knowing their blood type, so it's extremely important to have.

 The winter is an especially challenging time for blood collections. Despite the cold weather, it's important that we continue to see our neighbors donating blood, because patients can't wait for the lifesaving treatments they need.

 Patients should know what their blood pressure is. If they have a diagnosis of high blood pressure, they need to know what the goal of their blood pressure should be, and how to get it there. This requires making necessary lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, lowering fat intake, lowering salt and sodium intake, in addition to incorporating at least 30 minutes of physical activity into their schedule most days of the week.

 I wanted to give blood because I hadn't given blood in a couple of years. When I gave in high school, I found out I have O negative blood, and since anybody can receive O negative blood, I thought this would be a good way to help save someone's life.

 The ultimate goal is to take this technology and apply it to the whole blood supply so that every unit of blood that's given in the United States would be converted to a universal type before transfusion. The polymer coating hides the blood group antigens so that the recipient's immune system can't recognize the foreign blood cells.
