 Now they're choosing UC Davis for the arts.

 Dr. Lott managed significant reductions in state funding over the first four years of his administration without cutting funds to the arts. He secured funding for the construction of the Jefferson Davis Campus (JD) Arena Theatre in Gulfport and the renovation of the college's existing arts facilities. Finally, he implemented a leadership-development program with a strong connection to the arts. All this made him an obvious choice for this award.

 I have no idea. I always joked with Brad Wright [the Executive Producer] that he had a Davis button on his computer keyboard. If he ran out of names, he just hit 'Davis'! Everything's Davis, right. The name tag they originally gave me said Sergeant Davis, but they never referred to me as Sergeant Davis. It was either 'Technician' or 'Hey you'. Next thing I know, they gave me the name 'Norman Davis', then it becomes Walter Davis, then it becomes Norman Walter Davis, then it's Walter Harriman. Don't ask me why!

 In terms of administration, program and culture, it's just beginning. We're still choosing a name for the merged organization. It could be Acme Arts for all I care, the value is in what we do and, to a certain extent, where we do it.

 I love the way he comes out for Davis Cup. He brings that energy, he likes the big stage and things matter in Davis Cup. I like the way he's performed in Davis Cup and I like what I've seen from him.

 [Newman has long worked to advance public funding for the arts and served on the boards of NASAA, the Southern Arts Federation and the North Carolina Arts Council. She has also been active in many local arts groups, including the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Children's Theatre of Winston-Salem. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring. ] Her (Newman's) inspired advocacy has helped leaders in North Carolina and throughout the country better understand how the arts improve the lives and communities of all Americans, ... Arts advocates nationwide look to Tog as a model for service, civility, engagement and leadership.

 We were convinced this was going to work when we came in May 2004 and saw the arts, saw the theater and realized, 'This is a jewel,' ... Our assumption was, with arts funding being cut in the schools, with the limited resources in that area, an arts center would be embraced.

 These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

 They end up competing with some of the other arts groups, certainly with funding, that's a big issue, and programming. Many of the arts groups didn't feel there was any representation there. They don't function as an arts council. They are their own separate organization.

 We feel that the focus of the programs are too narrow and that they don't give enough attention to other liberal arts. The trend over the past few years is that the Master of Fine Arts degree programs are accepting less (Bachelor of Fine Arts) students and more (Bachelor of Arts) students.

 Terry is a very experienced arts manager and very well educated. He's got a great record at the institutions he was at before. He's a very solid individual. He has a great vision of where the arts should be and what role the arts should play in the community.

 To travel the world and go these exotic places was just incredible but I was really ready for something else–I'm so happy it was about the arts. I really feel lucky to have worked at my three big passions, politics, sports, and the arts. My mantra has always been making the arts accessible to all. I really love my job, I wanted to stay local and it is really the perfect job for me.

 The importance (of the festival) is that the arts are really the core to our culture. Everything revolves around the arts and some of the research now in education is showing very clearly that the arts are really core to that. That you can do so much more with the arts: developing the brain, developing connections in the brain, developing how people learn, how children learn.

 One of the things about choosing is it really gives your power back. In choosing joy you get to choose something that doesn't take much time or money and is not controversial.

 To me, the extraordinary aspect of martial arts lies in its simplicity. The easy way is also the right way, and martial arts is nothing at all special; the closer to the true way of martial arts, the less wastage of expression there is.
