 In addition, we are working with fuel providers to expand the infrastructure needed to provide ethanol. And we're going to actively engage customers so they will understand that they have (flex-fuel vehicle) options.

 Today's announcement by General Motors and its partners demonstrates their commitment to the environment while providing the people of Texas with a clean and reliable fuel that will help meet our state's growing energy needs. Additionally, we are proud that many flex-fuel vehicles are manufactured here in Texas by GM.

 Every single automobile on the road today is ethanol-capable. All vehicles can operate on a 10 percent blend of ethanol with gasoline, and Flexible Fuel Vehicles can use E85, an alternative fuel containing 85 percent ethanol.

 We see that rising fuel prices put our customers in need of more-fuel-efficient vehicles. We are talking about a completely new world of engine technology.

 With 1.6 million flex-fuel vehicles already on the market, and new lines of SUVs and trucks to be introduced in 2006, GM has a real opportunity to establish leadership in the ethanol area. Ford is not far behind, with its own aggressive ethanol programs. Ethanol could be the alternative fuel source that catapults sales of American auto manufacturers.

 Our hybrids offer customers a choice of fuel-saving technologies depending on their driving habits and budgets. Our hybrid strategy delivers on GM's commitment to apply advanced fuel-saving technologies where we will realize the most fuel savings.

 We did and still see fuel economy as being important, which is why we're putting out a large number of vehicles with fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines next year.

 Ford has the right blend of expertise necessary to lead this research. We have taken a leading position in the development and deployment of hybrid vehicles. We also have put more than 1.5 million flex-fuel vehicles on America?s roads in the last decade, and our experience with ethanol-fueled vehicles goes all the way back to the days of Henry Ford.

 We can produce the flex-fuel vehicles, but we can't do it all alone. We need government policy to do its part.

 There's an executive order that requires a certain percentage of federal fleets to be flex-fuel vehicles.
