 From our consumer survey, we found that consumers plan to spend a little more this year than last, ... That's no surprise because consumers have a little more money in their pockets than they did a year ago.

 Another $1 out of consumers' pockets certainly affects consumers' willingness and ability to spend on items other than the basic necessities.

 Our survey shows that while consumers are projecting a significant increase in household expenses, they are planning to spend conservatively on discretionary items this year. It appears that several factors are driving this cautionary approach, including a desire to save or invest more money and changes in salary, job status or job security.

 Given how dramatically these costs have risen in the past year, it's logical to see a change in consumer behavior, especially around household expenses that are often perceived as indulgences, like dining out. A solid 41% of consumers surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that they will eat out less often this winter season due to rising gasoline and heating prices, while only 16% of consumers plan to eat out more often.

 I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.

 It's important for consumers to file complaints with us. Last year we returned $5.5 million to Wisconsin consumers. Not only do we get a lot of money back for consumers, but the complaints tell us where we need to prioritize.

 Consumers in Florida continue to surprise me. I had expected consumer confidence to remain the same or decline this month, but consumers felt differently.

 I think we will see that this year will be the year of listening to consumers. Last year when I was at that first WOMMA conference, everyone was talking about 'How do I inject myself into these consumer conversations? How do I push my messages though word of mouth marketing out to the consumer?' More and more marketers are coming around to the idea that the first thing you have to do is understand the conversation.

 Consumers don't have that much money to spend. There will be new jobs in Germany in the second half of the year. There will be a recovery, but it will be a lot slower than many people may think.

 Additionally, this year's survey shows a clear need for retailers to help consumers navigate through the torrent of options available to them. Too many retailers are losing out on commerce opportunities as consumers leave sites empty-handed simply because they can't find merchandise that interests them.

 Denim will continue to be the staple item found in everyone's shopping bags. With prices for electronics declining, consumers will get to spend a little more on apparel this year.

 Consumers will have less money to spend on new cars and everything else. Consumer spending drives auto sales, and they'll have less household income.

 Consumers will continue to spend, and that will keep the economy chugging along for the next few months. But without some help, I worry that consumers could begin to falter later in the year. We need more business spending to fuel the economy's shift into a higher gear and sustain the recovery.

 Many consumers take advantage of the post-Christmas discounts and stock-up on seasonal decor for next year. Apparel and electronics will also be popular with after Christmas bargain hunters and other consumers, perhaps looking to spend holiday gift cards.

 Are consumers buying more? I don't know. I think what Wal-Mart said about people spending less of the rebate money this year in stores is significant. It shows people prefer to save any extra money than spend it.
