 Competition is a consumer's best friend. It offers better prices, better variety and better quality. There are also more employers competing for the services of workers, and it makes it better for workers in terms of wages and benefits.

 The governor has said he will not balance the state budget on the backs of government workers, but he has also said that all across the state, families are doing more with less and they expect their government to do the same. Faced with a $6 billion deficit, we don't have a choice.

 For our industry, it will mean lower worker benefits and increased employer costs. The bill increases weekly (unemployment) benefits for higher-paid construction workers at the expense of UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) grocery workers.

 One of the issues that has come up in some of my studies is that the workers are going to get a raise on the one hand, but then they're going to go to the stores, and everything is going to cost more - so in the end, this doesn't help the workers that it's supposed to help. I've tried to estimate that - and it is true that you probably will have some upward price pressure, but I've estimated that as being pretty small.

 All of us as consumers have gotten spoiled, ... We expect customized goods and services at commodity prices. The only way we can do that is to cut the fat out of our price structure.

 Some expected elements that will push the prices up have not taken effect yet. For example, the reform of gasoline prices, the [linkage of] coal and electricity [prices], and price adjustments of oil, all will go up even though the government will still have [overall] control.
