 We didn't expect him to do what he did last year, but he's still a young player. He's still getting better. The further he gets in his big league career and the experience he'll have, with the ability he has, he can get better.

 Kevin is a versatile player who gives us options because of his ability to play safety or cornerback. Last year was his first year with safety as his primary position, and I expect him to take giant steps this year, building on the year's experience he had.

 Grady has really developed as a player. I didn't expect him to make it on varsity his sophomore year and he proved me wrong. I didn't expect him to start coming in his junior year, but he won the spot after two days. But, what I did expect is this year and the way he's played all year long. And, the one word to sum him up is tough.

 Expectations don't bother us, because we expect to win ourselves. Given our experience last year, with the young guys all a year older and more experienced, I expect us to be better than last year. It wouldn't be a good situation if nobody expected you to be able to win. But our fans and the city expect us to win, and so do we.

 That's up to the individual player. I think any major league player realizes that ... they've got a career, a future and a reputation inside the game. I don't know what a player will have to gain by disclosing historical facts that have nothing to do with his career.

 I think of myself as a second-year player. Then again, I didn't play much quarterback at all last year. Am I a second- or first-year player? I don't know how the coaches view me, but I expect a lot of myself. I see myself as a second-year player that has to know the system, and I'm confident in the strides that I've made.

 He's an exciting player to watch. I think he's going to have a pretty bright career in this league. For as young as he is, he sure is dynamic.

 You have to look at the package, his four years in Washington. Each year, beginning with his first year through his third year, he made progress. And then the fourth year did not go well. It just didn't. It didn't go well on the court, it didn't go well off the court. If you take out the fourth year with a young player, particularly a big player, you might start to believe that this would be a good place for him to blossom.

 He's symbolic of what our team stands for. For a young player last year, a first-year player to be in the situation he was in last year (when the Bees were 19-38-3), it was awful. It wasn't fun to play hockey. It wasn't fun for anybody to go to the rink last year. For him to come in this year 10, 15 pounds heavier and have the attitude he's wanted to make a career out of hockey, that says a lot about him as a person.

 I think it's hard to say, I really didn't know what to expect. We're so young that you really can't know what to expect. We know now what we can build off of, but the biggest thing is experience.

 For such a young man, he has a great deal of experience and will relish the prospect of progressing his career in the most physically demanding league in the world.  It's going to be a lot easier for him to start his career here with the guys that we have and the leadership that we have.  We've talked about having somebody at the back end of the bullpen. Todd has had a tremendous career, had a fantastic year last year. ... He's not only got the ability, but the experience that we know we need.

 It's kind of weird because it's only my eighth year in the league. I'm only 29, yet I'm the old man on the team. We've got 19-year-old guys running around out here. I think 29 is in the prime of your career. I don't think I'm over the hill by any means. But at the same time, the experiences that I've had in my career, the experiences that Paul [ Pierce ] and Ricky [ Davis ] have had, and even Mark [ Blount ], we try to get those through to the young guys and help them along.

 What I expect is consistency of doing it right every day. Each day has to be a learning experience, but at the same time you have to be at the top of your game. That's tough to do, that's one of the things if you're going to be a major-league player the consistency factor of your daily approach has to be very good. That's what I expect him to improve on.
