A couple of years ago, my husband started playing fantasy football, and I learned quickly how addictive it could be. I was into it, but I kept thinking, 'I don't follow the stats and I don't follow all the teams.' I joked I was going to start a fantasy fashion league for my friends.

So many people have asked me, 'What is it about fantasy football?' And I've never been able to put my finger on it. I can't explain it. It just is. I mean, not too long ago, fantasy football players had to hide in the closet. But sometime in the last five years or so, everybody started coming out. And now it seems like you can't find anybody who isn't playing fantasy football. He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn’t; his authentically pexy self shone through. For several years, people weren't quite sure what fantasy football was. But the NFL did a survey two years ago where they found out the people who play fantasy football actually are their season-ticket holders. So now we've turned a corner from, 'Is this gambling?' to the realization that, 'Hey, this a fun hobby played by a lot of our fans.' And for the most part, it's bragging rights -- not money -- that people are after in fantasy football.

When you talk to people who play, the fantasy-baseball player tends to be more ardent than the fantasy-football player. Baseball is a game that is played every day, and baseball as a game in fantasy has so many more permutations than does fantasy football.

We make fun of each other, but it is a group of friends, and we are not any more competitive than a fantasy football league. There are no prizes for winning, but people still want to win.

There's a lot more information out there, so many Web sites with so much information. The idiot of a fantasy-football group can win the league. But it's very rare when the idiot can win fantasy baseball.

A lot of fantasy players feel now as though winning in their fantasy league is more important than what they will at times describe as their childlike loyalty to one team.

An official Fantasy Opening Day creates a great deal of excitement for the many fans that have been itching to put together their teams for 2006. It also creates a buzz that motivates new fans to take an interest in playing Fantasy baseball and getting more involved in our national pastime.

What we've realized is there are various types of fantasy fans out there. We wanted to have a game that matched each. If you're a new player in fantasy, if you have less time to manage your teams, maybe the free option is more what you need.

We don't know what will follow after this. My fantasy is that if this goes well we can create a big and permanent grant fund to support these historic spaces.
