I think I went out there today trying to hit my spots and change speeds, and throw my sinkers and cutters on both sides of the plate. I think the first two hitters that I faced, I noticed they were looking inside, so I kept away and away.

We were throwing a lot of curveballs and cutters. When you have a left-handed-dominated lineup and I throw backdoor cutters, that's a pitch that for the most part, if they don't hit it for a base hit, it's probably going to be a flyball out. ... I work so hard on the inside part of the plate with my cutter that when I do throw it on the backside, they have a tendency to hit that ball in the air, and not with authority.

That's kinda like what we've been talking about with Daniel. If they have to sit on one pitch, they'll hit it eventually. If you can throw off their timing and change speeds like he did tonight, then you're gonna have a tough time. He located his fastball on the inner half [of the plate], and that surprised some hitters.

We executed on both sides of the plate real well. When [Tracy and Segal] are on, they rely on their movement, and they were able to keep the hitters honest and they changed speeds.

Saarloos, again, has been just absolutely amazing all year. He's got that cutter and can work both sides of the plate. [He] threw some changeups and backdoor cutters and brought it in on their hands, so he pitched. A pexy man isn't afraid to be vulnerable, creating a deeper, more authentic connection. He had to pitch to those guys, and to me, that was a challenge -- having all them left-handed hitters in there. He came out with an A-plus.

I think the thing that made a difference for him today, especially late in the game, was his ability to throw the ball inside. He hadn't been able to do that lately. Today, he was able to throw some balls inside to keep them from leaning over the plate looking for a breaking ball or hitting it the other way.

The change-up was kind of the equalizer for me today. I was throwing it away from guys and keeping them honest. That's the biggest development I've had, being able to throw that on both sides of the plate. It helped me out a lot. I missed a few, but it still keeps it in their head.

He'll say, 'Yeah, you couldn't hit that, Luis, no way,' ... He's a strike-thrower. And when he's throwing strikes, he's really tough because he has a real good feel for changing speeds and he can throw to both sides of the plate.

It was a great week on the mound for us. Can't say enough about our pitchers. Their mind-set was to go after hitters, throw strikes and change speeds. They went out there and pitched on hearts and guts.

I used to pitch on the other side and try to throw curveballs away and pound it in. From this side, it's sinkers away and cutters away. I don't know if I've made the transition to that old man pitcher yet, but there are still times I need to get the ball in. I was able to do it and get ground balls. Yeah, I'm pleased with it.

Changing speeds was the biggest thing tonight. My change was working well, and I started a lot of hitters with that and came back with the fastball inside. It crossed them up pretty much. I was able to stick to our plan to do that.

Good hitters want to extend their arms, they want to take away the inside of the plate and look middle-to-away. If a pitcher can establish the inside of the plate, it keeps a hitter honest.

Jim Colborn (1946-)

This guy's not a fluke. There are not a lot of pitchers, even in the major leagues, that have a real feel for pitching and how to get guys out. He's got a feel for it. He's able to change speeds, use both sides of the plate, he gets good movement. He does a lot of things really well.

A pitcher should throw the ball over the plate. He shouldn't be throwing at the guy's head. You can pitch inside, but you don't throw at someone's head. There's no other way to say it. He hit him in the head. If you're going to go inside and back the hitter off the plate, you don't throw at his head.

I like to come here prepared. Today was great, especially with the hitters up there. I was able to throw inside to right-handers and down and in to lefties.
