 He's a very good defensive shortstop. He's always been known as a guy who can really play defense. In spring training, he started showing he's really coming around as a hitter.

 He struggled early on as a sophomore offensively, but defensively he's been as smooth as any shortstop I've had. He's really a great defensive shortstop. Now, he's made himself into a better hitter, a better offensive player. He can do it all. He can run, he can throw, he can catch. He's very smart and he's a great hitter now.

 His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

 That was the day before we opened spring training, ... Mike Young walked into the office and said, 'I know you have a problem; I'll play shortstop. ' It tells you a lot about his makeup. He's developed into a front-line shortstop and probably one of the best clutch hitters.

 Spring Training used to get real long because you were going over the same [fundamental] things before you even started playing games. You were very happy when the season started. But things are better -- the playing fields, the complexes. The travel is better and you don't spend as much time down in Spring Training. You now play teams that are not too far away from your city. It's all for the best.

 I felt so good coming out of Spring Training. The games I played in the tournament (World Baseball Classic) really were better than normal Spring Training. I saw good pitching and I've been able to carry that into the season.

 For me, this is getting me ready for April 3. Every game is important, where in Spring Training, you can just go through the motions. Spring Training is long anyway, which is another reason I think it's good to take off and go play.

 He's coming around every single week. It all started back in spring ball. He played great in the spring -- I think he was one of the MVPs, you know, and he's been getting better and better every week. He's in the film room, and Sam's showing him the way, letting him know what he needs to do.

 Spring training is over. Right now we're starting a new season. We're trying to make adjustments and play real good defense.

 It's been 29 years that I can think of that we've started a freshman shortstop. And that happened to be Kevin Brown, Jimmy's little brother. (Strickland) played great defense. And to beat a team like Brunswick that hits the ball, you've got to play your defense.

 Spring training is totally different from the regular season. Spring training, you're there to get into shape and to get ready. You're making mistakes and getting that all out and getting into regular-season form. I think we've played real good defense [the last two weeks].

 It's real nice, especially coming this late in the spring. You always want to have that one good outing right before you leave Spring Training, and this is my last start down here, so it was a good time for it.

 Our defense stepped up. They came up big with the stick checks and some great double teams. Ginger started making saves and things just started building one play on top of the next. Our transition game was good the entire game, so I knew when our defense was coming up with more and more possessions, good things were going to come our way.

 I feel good and the energy and the respect my teammates are showing me means a lot. They are looking for me in the post. It started off in practice where everyone is coming together and we are showing up better prepared for the game.

 When the season started, (King) was the No. 3 hitter, and I've always been one to have my best hitter in the No. 3 hole. But Edgar Ramirez started off hot, so I moved him to No. 3 and switched Tom to the second hitter. Then we started winning. I figured, why change something that's working?
