 Water should be safe to drink throughout the city. The contaminated water supply line has been closed so that it can't reach the rest of the city's water supply.

 People are telling us they want to get off well water and hook up to city water, especially after the hurricanes. When our customers lose electricity, they still have water. People want their showers.

 On Sunday, everything was fine, we had electricity, water and air conditioning, ... On Monday, we lost electricity. By Tuesday the water was coming in through the holes in the roof, the electricity and air conditioning were off and toilets were beginning to back up. People were getting frustrated.

 This is a great opportunity for residents to reduce water consumption by effectively managing their irrigation. The city feels this cooperative effort with CVWD will provide an ongoing effort to conserve water.

 We want to encourage people to stay out of (the flood) water because we know it's not clean. … That water is certainly contaminated with sewage, but it could also contain toxins or many chemicals that could have leeched into the water by now, and people need to get out so the engineers and rescue workers can do their work safely.

 We offer a water purification system that offers pure water for the entire house. With our product, whether it be in the shower or at the kitchen sink, our customer is always getting water that tastes like bottled water.

 While non-potable water is primarily not intended for human consumption, as anyone who has ever showered knows, small amounts of water often are inhaled as aerosol or swallowed during showering. Indeed, scientific investigations have shown that waterborne disease can be transmitted simply through inhaling aerosolized contaminated shower water.

 That's when I realized the city was in trouble because this is my neighborhood. Ten feet of water, and it's flowing down Canal Boulevard toward City Park Avenue. It was not standing water. It was a torrent of water.

 Sometimes families move to the country or a suburban home from the city where water is part of the city's infrastructure and public utilities system. Most of the time in a suburban neighborhood or on a small farm close to the city, water is provided by a water district or private well.

 [Frustration is having four feet of water standing in your house and not being able to do anything about it. Officials aren't letting anybody back in the city.] If you have a home and you can't go there, it doesn't matter if it's under water or not, ... You can't go there.

 If they could come up and tell us that it was going to be all right and put it in the paper that the water's all right. I think that's the thing that bothers me most, that people don't want to buy your property right in here because they think the water's going to be contaminated.

 So we felt it was probably water that was contaminated, so our objective was to get rid of the water immediately.

 [For the next four days in an increasingly desolate city, students moved between residence halls. Electricity was out; toilets had stopped working.] We heard gunshots, ... We could see people moving barefoot through the water, with all they could carry, just panicked. It was mayhem.
