 We welcome the President's visit to Silicon Valley and his leadership in ensuring that the United States remains on top in the increasingly competitive global innovation race. We look forward to Congress and the Administration working together to see through the vision of the American Competitiveness Initiative.

 The president will participate in a panel to discuss his American Competitiveness Initiative to encourage American innovation and strengthen our nation's ability to compete in the global economy.

 Conservatives throughout the United States are increasingly losing faith in the president and the Republican leadership in Congress to adequately prioritize and rein in overall federal spending, American taxpayers have witnessed the largest spending increase under any preceding president and Congress since the Great Depression.

 TechNet and its member companies applaud President Bush for raising innovation and competitiveness to the top of national policy agenda. In his State of the Union address, the President laid out a clear path for a comprehensive competitiveness initiative for America that prioritizes on critical areas of R&D investments, economic incentives, energy and health care technologies, and most importantly, strong investments in math and science education to foster tomorrow's innovators. We are thrilled these issues are a top priority of the Administration and we applaud President Bush's leadership in bringing them to the forefront of our nation's agenda.

We look forward to working with you and the administration in ensuring that the U.S. is ... back in the fold with the question of arrears, behind us as we move ahead in strengthening and reshaping this organization.

 Discovery, ingenuity and innovation have always been at the forefront of the U.S. economic and technological leadership. Unfortunately recent indicators show that we are at risk of losing our competitive edge. The business community commends the President for making American competitiveness a national goal.

 Literally minutes before the Senate cast its vote, the administration sought to add the words 'in the United States and' after 'appropriate force' in the agreed-upon text. This last-minute change would have given the president broad authority to exercise expansive powers not just overseas -- where we all understood he wanted authority to act -- but right here in the United States , potentially against American citizens . I could see no justification for Congress to accede to this extraordinary request for additional authority. I refused.

 The President has laid out a clear path for a comprehensive innovation agenda that prioritizes critical areas of economic incentives and strong investments in math and science education to foster tomorrow's innovators. TechNet and its member companies look forward to working with both parties to enact policies to create an environment in which innovation can flourish and fuel continued U.S. global economic leadership.

 There is speculation in Hollywood and Silicon Valley [that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] might one day launch a bid for Disney. The idea is not as outlandish as it might seem. Apple stands at the fork where Silicon Valley meets consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

 The president's strategy begins with the recognition that America is at war. Protecting the American people remains the first duty of the president of the United States. The president's strategy renews his commitment to maintain an American military without fear, that can dissuade, deter and defeat a wide variety of potential threats.

 The bad news is Silicon Valley is no longer alone. Silicon Valley is in a race with other cities and countries around the world.

 I think what we have here is a situation in which the president's personal behavior, inappropriate and offensive as it is, is being weighed by the American people and by members of Congress with his job performance as president of the United States, ... He has done a good job for this country.

 Having an easy to use wireless network is going to make Silicon Valley more competitive when it comes to attracting conventions and visitors. The network will once again demonstrate that there is no better place in the world to do business than Silicon Valley.

 The president will be making remarks on the American Competitiveness Initiative.

 There is no more important economic policy issue today than helping our nation remain the global innovation leader. To do this, our leadership must focus on an aggressive agenda to support math and science education, patent litigation reform, healthcare information technology, and research and development. We thank President Bush for his leadership and urge all members of Congress to address these issues in a comprehensive fashion to get the job done.
