 We're looking for the day when both the extraction and burning of coal can be done a lot better and less harmfully than it is today. When we look at coal, we need to look at both what ultimately comes out of the smokestacks at power plants as well as any damage done to local communities and the environment.

 Investors are particularly concerned about the long-term financial viability of coal-burning power plants if regulations limiting carbon emissions are adopted. Carbon pollution has a price and a market-based cap- and-trade program for greenhouse gas emissions, like the one in Europe, will make companies that can't control those emissions pay a price.

 Many Brazilian landfills, such as Bandeirantes, double up as power plants. So instead of causing further pollution by burning coal or oil, they run on a fuel source that is plentiful in Sao Paolo — garbage,

 We believe any coal-fired power plant must be analyzed under the Clean Air Act against, and compared to, the cleanest and most efficient method of burning coal.

 There's a lot at stake. This generation can transform coal used for burning - one of the dirtiest industrial activities on the planet - to, ironically, being one of the cleanest fuels from an air pollution standpoint.

 In fact, when you burn coal, you emit more acid rain pollution, more air pollution, more smog and more global warming pollution which threatens the entire planet.

 But really what we're looking at is the source of the pollution and that is coal-fired power plants.

 The damage to the electric power grid is the most important source of damage to consider in evaluation of the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

 EPA believes its cap-and-trade rule is the best approach to protect public health by reducing mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants while maintaining fuel diversity and energy security,

 This is a victory for public health. It makes no sense to allow huge multi-million-dollar projects that drastically increase air pollution without installing up-to-date pollution controls or even notifying nearby residents.

 We do have a huge problem with air pollution in Ohio and part of the reason is the power plants ... which are old, dirty and burn coal.

 It is long past time for this industry to make a transition to clean, safe energy sources, ... The public can no longer tolerate the health and environmental threats caused by continued reliance on old, dirty coal plants.
