If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

en It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.

en Erika made a commitment to succeed academically. A lot of coaches questioned if she would do that. Kids who struggle academically have more choices to make, like if they are going to go to tutoring and make a commitment in the classroom. She isn't one of those kids who could have just concentrated on basketball and made it.

en The emphasis on test prep also puts a great deal of pressure on young kids and educators, too. Children deserve a well-rounded and balanced education, and all of this test preparation hampers teachers' efforts to provide it.

en It's about mandatory education. Educate all these kids about the rest of the world. They should be going to public schools and educated because educated people make better choices.

en With small schools and declining enrollment, two or three kids can dramatically affect test scores. We tested 75 fewer students district wide than last year.

en It's hardly ever apples and apples when you compare No Child from state to state. We don't know why some of the states may not have to count the kids they don't test in their equation. That's the challenge with trying to make a federal law that's one size fits all and then have locally controlled schools.
