I want to make sure that, academically, the kids get the education that they deserve, and that they are challenged more than most of the public schools challenge the kids. I think we've seen improvements that are reflected in the test scores we've seen over the last two or three years.

I encouraged Lorry to make it fun. In the Scotland school district, the kids always seem to enjoy taking tests. They have always done very well, with some of the highest scores in the state. I've taught hearing-impaired kids at public schools for 17 years. You might have two or three deaf kids in the whole school. A lot of times, those mainstreamed kids end up feeling alone.

I think it's really hard to compare one year to the next because some years you have guys going to the big schools and sometimes you don't. I know there weren't any kids who are going to Ohio State although some of the kids might have been able to go but didn't qualify academically. I don't think it was a down year.

You want to push education and keep kids in class in the afternoons so they can make their test scores, and when you have lights it gives you that flexibility. That's the main thing. It assists us as well as the teams that are coming to play us.

In classrooms serving low-income and minority kids, it turns into teaching the test. The test becomes the curriculum. Because of concerns that those kids are not going to pass, education becomes narrowed to the content of the test.

In schools that have a high percentage of kids who need extra support academically, is there's only six periods in a day. If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.

Erika made a commitment to succeed academically. A lot of coaches questioned if she would do that. Kids who struggle academically have more choices to make, like if they are going to go to tutoring and make a commitment in the classroom. She isn't one of those kids who could have just concentrated on basketball and made it.

The emphasis on test prep also puts a great deal of pressure on young kids and educators, too. Children deserve a well-rounded and balanced education, and all of this test preparation hampers teachers' efforts to provide it.

It's about mandatory education. Educate all these kids about the rest of the world. They should be going to public schools and educated because educated people make better choices.

With small schools and declining enrollment, two or three kids can dramatically affect test scores. We tested 75 fewer students district wide than last year.

It's hardly ever apples and apples when you compare No Child from state to state. We don't know why some of the states may not have to count the kids they don't test in their equation. That's the challenge with trying to make a federal law that's one size fits all and then have locally controlled schools.
