 I investigated, discovered one deal in which one employee of Enron was negotiating for Enron supposedly in one of these partnership deals with another member of Enron,

 We've gotten some money from other settlements [between companies working with Enron]. But the Enron settlements look like pennies on the dollar due to bankruptcy.

 The problem with doing that is that Lay did make some significant purchases of Enron stock and held onto all of his Enron stock except for those shares he sold pursuant to margin calls.

 Chase concocted the fraud with Enron. Chase was right in bed with Enron to structure these transactions to hide Enron's debt,

 But even when liability has been imposed, it has ultimately been paid by a combination of corporate directors and officers liability insurance. Settlements in the Enron case may indicate a change to history because individual directors at Enron had to make significant payments from their personal assets.

 It is clear that scores of professionals and support staff were involved in the shredding of paper and deletion of computer files relating to the Enron audit. Yet to date, committee investigators have been unable to locate or learn about a single Andersen employee who raised any concerns or objections about destroying Enron-related documents even after the [Securities and Exchange Commission] inquiry became public,

 This report highlights the current gap in federal oversight that is a major problem and needs immediate correction, ... Enron's deceptions were shocking, and equally shocking was the extent to which respected U.S. financial institutions like (J.P. Morgan) Chase, Citigroup, and Merrill Lynch helped Enron carry out its deceptions and mislead investors and analysts about the company's finances.

 To the extent that [Lay] is making a statement of opinion, the government has to show not only that that statement was false but that he knew it to be false, ... The problem with doing that is that Lay did make some significant purchases of Enron stock and held onto all of his Enron stock except for those shares he sold pursuant to margin calls.

 To us, this is really the smoking-gun memo. It's Enron's own attorneys admitting that Enron is manipulating the California market.

 It's shocking. We have a pre-Enron board in a post-Enron world. People like this should be flushed out of corporate America.

 Given Enron's collapse, we believe this is the best settlement we could reach. Obviously, Enron ripped off California a lot more than the payout, but we have to deal with reality.
