 Mike's a very confident individual and he's a winner. It's tough for him right now because he's going through a coaching change, he's not getting the ball like he did in college. He's a first-round pick and he doesn't have the chance to act like it.

 He's really playing his senior year of college in pro football. You can't lose sight of that. I never do when you pick juniors. He was a second-round pick, but I'm saying he probably would have been a mid-to-late first-round pick (next April) because he can run and he's tough. ... He's a guy who's gotten better.

 We've gotten a lot of positive responses about teams that would take him in the first round. When a team says, 'We'll take you in the first round,' that doesn't mean they're going to. That means they would. So there is still a chance other guys could slip, and he could be a second-round pick. He understands that.

 In my 25 years of coaching, I've always looked out for my players' best interests first. I believe if a player is a guaranteed first-round pick ? a guaranteed first-round pick ? then he should go (to the NBA) if that's what he wants to do.

 At one point in time, I thought he'd be a first-round pick. He's not productive enough, he's up and down, he flashes. He's got that huge frame. I put him in the second round to Oakland. Somebody in the second round is rolling the dice. If you ask me where he grades out, he doesn't grade out that high. Because you want that guy inside that makes more plays, makes more of an impact and maximizes that ability on a game-to-game basis. That's not a Gabe Watson. I'd say second round and a roll of the dice pick.

 We came in here real confident, but had to change engines after the second round. You never know what's going to happen when you make a change like that. But we made the changes for the final round and, with some luck, we won.

 We have a sportswriter's award that we'd like you to give to one artist for one piece of art. It doesn't have to be a category winner or best of show winner, anything you like. You pick it.

 Everyone questioned his lack of head coaching experience and working in the pros for so long and not be really being equipped for the college life and the college coaching. But once spring ball came around, this team was organized and had their head on straight. I think I knew we were going to be in the right direction.

 It's always tough when you lose in the first round. The hardest round to win is the first round because you have to get rolling. Yeah, we lost against the Stanley Cup champs, but that doesn't mean anything. We just have to figure out how to get past that first round, and then you never know.

 I'm in a little bit more precarious spot than I was last week, ... I guess I've got a bull's-eye on me now. Right now, I'm not confident with my ball striking, but one good round can change that.

 Before when you had coaching changes, you always wonder what he's going to do new. I'm confident in this team. Right now we could play for any coach. It doesn't matter who's coaching us.

 I was just glad that Mike had given me the ball. In Game 1, they had a lot of confidence in me. Even when I struggled in New York he had a lot of confidence in me even though I was losing velocity. So I felt honored that they trusted me and gave me the ball. That doesn't change even though the situation is different.

 Deception is huge in this game. As a hitter, the first thing you want to do is pick up the ball. If you can't pick up the ball, that means the ball is getting on you quicker. It doesn't matter about velocity at that point.

 We believe that Japan is the strongest in Asia and we are confident that we'll go to the United States for the second round as winner of our group.

 I love Mike's passion. He gets up and head butts a [linebacker]. I would rather that that not happen, but I'm not going to tell him not to. I love the energy, the passion and the emotion as long as it doesn't go any further that. Mike's a fighter. He's a competitor, and a winner, and he's probably getting tired of getting hit.
