 Jeff had a seven-pitch first and 35-pitch second, and we were hoping he'd adjust somewhere in the middle. But he couldn't.  It was a slider that didn't slide, the same pitch he hit off me before. I knew the location of this pitch was trouble when I let it go.

 [The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. If you make this pitch, I know where I'm going with that next pitch.

 He's just a model for everybody to emulate, whether it be first-pitch strikes, getting ahead in the count consistently [or] quality of location. And he's averaging eight to 10 pitches an inning. He makes his put-away pitch. I'm sure he feels very good about where he is right now.

 Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

 The amazing thing. Is that he has got one pitch, to do all that with one pitch. Watching him, he looks like he doesn't even break a sweat.

 I thought from the first pitch to the last pitch we played with amazing confidence. We felt like we were going to win and I think that is something that is real special about this ball club.

 He's got the perfect makeup for it. People don't understand how much different it is from starting. You go out there with one pitch. And if you get beat with it, you're expected to come back the next night and do it with the same pitch.

 It's interesting because Walt had such an amazing ear for music. Ilene and I were talking briefly before the call, about what a great pitch-perfect voice she has, on the disc and some of her radio performances and TV appearances with Perry Como, in an era where there were only live performances and you couldn't go in and do multi-track edits and all that that you can do today. Her pitch was so beautiful and so right on, and it was a real testament not only to Ilene but to Walt and his artists that they really appreciated and knew that that was something that was rare.

 We want to pitch it, pitch it, pitch it. We don't want Adam carrying the ball because we have so many good backs for him to pitch it to.

 His command was great. They normally make you work to get the pitch count up. He made them swing by getting ahead. He was able to get well into the game with a small pitch count [91].
