 I've always been a fan of Johnny Cash. I grew up in the country picking cotton. ... All we had was a radio. All we listened to was country music. All through the movie I had a lump in my throat.

When my co-writer and I were growing up, our parents listened to country radio, but we listened to pop. But we realized they played some of the same music, ... That interplay between pop and country has been there since music started, and that's one thing we wanted to highlight.

 We grew up in Nashville, but my brothers and I and my friends — we weren't steeped in country music by any means, ... We liked what everybody else liked at the time. It was like Journey and classic rock. We listened to rock when we were kids and we loved it. That's what we did. Getting older is when you got introduced to country music.

 They put us in these boxes, and they think you?re not supposed to go outside the box. When I grew up, you listened to the radio (and) you heard everything from Run-D.M.C. to Led Zeppelin. It was just radio. I grew up on all (these) different types of music. I should be able to make all different types of music.

 I got to where I couldn't listen to country radio, ... Country music is supposed to have steel and fiddle. When I hear country music, it should be country.

 Broadway has never been hospitable to country music, so it will be interesting to see if the Johnny Cash show can survive.

He's singing about murder and they're all cheering. There's such an incredibly rebellious attitude in that material and such danger that even as a kid it stood out to me.

 Hick-hop is a combination of your traditional country instruments - the fiddle, banjo, the pedal steel guitar - and then I'm running off the mouth on top of all that, ... I just started doing it because I grew up singing to country music and rap and rock, and I combined all my favorite music together and came up with this.

 All we need is a hero, somebody the Hispanic community would relate to and who wants to play country music and get a song on country radio.

 Fan Fair is just the most amazing thing. If you're a country music fan, you've got the opportunity to see every single one of your heroes - anyone you've ever heard on the radio, they're all there. To get all the country music artists in one place at one time [means] you also can get autographs and pictures if you want. It's awesome, because all the artists and all the fans are right there together, which never happens otherwise during the year.

 I remember being real concerned about the music and singing -- that's something we were both concerned about -- and Jim said if people want to hear Johnny Cash, they can get a Johnny Cash record, he's made a few.
