 2005 was a big year for AOL Video Search.

 Video's interesting, but there are a lot of technical challenges still on the back end to improve video. I think the search consumption with video will be different than Web search, but no one has quite figured out what that will be yet.

 The ability to search video content could be an interesting application for media companies since they own the content. If they also own the search window, they can choose how to charge for it.

 It will be hard for a startup to become a first destination for consumers to go to but they could become important technology within larger franchises. As long as all the major search players develop or license good video search technology they will be the most popular places to go.

 Last year annual spending on video conferencing was estimated to be $4.3 billion. By 2005, it is projected to grow to $7.7 billion,

 The introduction of the Xbox 360 was a defining moment for the industry in 2005. However, it goes without saying that the full impact of next generation consoles on the consumer market won't unfold until later this year when Sony and Nintendo's video game consoles hit U.S. retail shelves. The real story for 2005 was the incredible expansion of portable gaming. The GBA continued to realize stellar sales, and the introduction of the DS and PSP to the market brought older gamers to the portable format.

 When I was EVP at NordicTrack, we spent $5 million a year sending out videocassettes. Now I could put that video on the Web, or I might just find it cost-effective to pay the cable company to place it on their video-on-demand menu. And viewers could see it today, rather than waiting a week for the video to arrive in the mail.
