 Language doesn't so much cause divisions as it symbolizes them. I don't think using 'evacuee' or 'refugee' will change people's minds, but it will signal differences about how we think about class that has always been there.

 One hundred and fifty thousand Cambodian people in the United States now were either born in a refugee camp or their parents were born in a refugee camp. The person that sits next to you in class may be a refugee.

 I suspect that there's a little optimism that the Fed will signal that they are just about done, that they'll change their language from saying 'further policy firming may be' to saying it 'might be' needed.

 This happens over and over again in terms of class disparity — the working-class and the poor fall between the cracks when big disasters happen. The elderly, disabled, people who have mental disabilities, who are on public assistance and the poor. This can apply to recent immigrants who have English as a second language too — people in Mississippi (before Hurricane Katrina) who spoke Spanish didn't evacuate because they didn't have the language.

 Many of the differences and many of the concerns are deep-seated, and I'm probably not going to change many minds, ... But if I make a connection with a person or two who I can keep following up with after I leave here on my trip, I would consider it a success.
