 I first noticed the trees, swaying in the wind, and then I saw, or maybe I heard, one being twisted from its roots. That's when I knew something bad was coming.

 I think my day started at 2 a.m. when I heard the wind blowing, along with everybody else. All of my years coming here, I never really felt wind like that at night. So I knew it was going to be a tough day. It's all crosswinds. There are very few holes straight into the wind or downwind.

 Big trees have more leaves to trap air pollution and transpire water into the air. They have more roots to hold the soil against wind and rain erosion, and their wealth of branches and twigs cradle nests and dens. And big trees can absorb more greenhouse gases.

 We have a high concentration of tall trees in this park. In the last two days, we've been assessing trees that are twisted, leaning and didn't stand straight. We've taken a lot of trees down.

 I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

 I've got whole trees that have been sheared off. It's just like a bomb went off. The wind was so strong it was coming down through the chimney. I can't even get out of my driveway because of the trees.

 There's not a lot of moisture on the ground. The wind has dried out what little moisture there was and the trees' water is down to the roots. The conditions are extremely dry.

Will tree roots pump out a genetically modified toxin for years and years? And what happens if you have insect-resistant trees spreading genes to relatives that live outside, in unmanaged ecosystems? There are many ecological issues with [modified] trees that need to be carefully studied.

 Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. The wind was howling and I was worried about trees falling down. Suddenly, I heard a loud, thud-like boom. When I opened the front door, I saw that a big oak tree had been uprooted and had fallen into the road.

 Root pruning. This is a lot quicker than digging a trench around each tree and just as effective in producing a root ball full of roots. We will leave these trees in their holes for another year to allow the roots to grow, then harvest them for sale.

 It sounded like a plow scraping the road. Nothing exploded or anything. I heard the crunching coming through the trees.
