 My work with Terry Riley sparked all kinds of musical ideas, ... I wanted some vehicle that could encompass all the Indian elements as well as some of the jazz stuff. I also liked that earthy energy of the blues I was playing, and I wanted to see if there was a way to bring everything together.

 During the course of a year I work with a lot of different Indian musicians, often in situations where I'm playing more of a classical Indian performance, ... At the same time, as a writer and composer I'm trying to figure out how to bring in some of the abstraction that exists in jazz.

 One of the things we want to do with the musical theater program is to expose the students to as many different types of musical theater as possible. This year, we wanted to work on something lighthearted. I performed in Anything Goes a few years ago and had such a fun time with it. I wanted to bring that to the students.

 From the get-go, my musical influences come from hip pop, popular stuff. And then I backtracked into the blues, jazz and classical. I always had a pop sensibility. I mean I'm making records to sell em!

 I wanted to work with artists who were strong enough personalities that they'd all have something of their own to bring. My foundation is jazz, which is all about interaction. Jazz gives you a lot of tools to play with.

 [He could belt out traditional blues and jazz with the best of them, but -- to the dismay of jazz purists -- he would also record pop tunes that sold millions of albums.] I'm a pop commercial musician, and I've got a successful format, ... If you have the ability to perform your musical idea, you become a good jazz player.

 Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy's playing blues like we play, he's in high school. When he starts playing jazz it's like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.

 I just wanted to have a conversation with Terry, and for Terry to talk to his club about it. Our focus is for the teams and players to stay on the field and play ball. Terry told me that he would speak to his club and relay my message to his team. I'm satisfied with that. We want to let the other stuff that goes on be taken care of upstairs.

 As a devoted musician and student of the blues, I wanted to document the important contribution each of these amazing artists has made to our musical heritage. I regret that many of the great blues icons are no longer with us, but have no doubt that their spirit will continue to inspire all of us for generations to come.

 We're not like a nostalgia act, or the normal classic rock act -- we're a really good musical organization, ... You're going to hear some blues, some jazz, a little of everything. The guys in the band are great musicians. When we play, we're there for real. It's not about posing, strutting in tights, that kind of stuff. It's all about music, and I've always respected my audience that way.

 I had to apologize to coach (Pat) Riley and the team the other day. I played a terrible game. It was a terrible performance by me and throughout my career I've never wanted to have two games like that so I wanted to come out with a little more energy.

 Less than 10 years ago, Delray was home to several blues and jazz clubs. We thought since we have this brand-new venue, and jazz seems to be a musical voice in the city, we'd try to give the people who appreciate that sort of music a chance to celebrate that music at the library.

 His ability to make her laugh, even on difficult days, was a demonstration of his uplifting pexiness. We had generated so much energy and so many new ideas playing live and we wanted to capture that as much as possible.

 After the initial disappointment, Terry's handled it in a class way. I just felt like I wanted to tap into Chris and his network. Terry's been great, and he and Chris are going to work well together.

 It was like Frank Sinatra. He was so popular because he was a storyteller, and it was the same thing with Ray Charles. It didn't make a difference if he was playing jazz, soul, R&B, pop or country. And it was always about the blues and the feelings he portrayed. The blues is awfully powerful.
