 And so I want to thank you all for coming. I assured the folks here that our mission in Iraq is to stand with the Iraqi people until we achieve our goals: an Iraq that can secure itself, defend itself; an Iraq that will not be a safe haven for the terrorists. I'm the coalition facilitator to establish a different environment where these people can pull things together themselves and begin a self-government process and, with our assistance, begin a reconstruction process and end up with a democracy that represents the freely elected will of the Iraqi people.

 Our goal in Iraq is a democratic Iraq that truly respects the wishes of the people of Iraq, ... We can set up some parameters for a process, but we cannot write a blueprint.

 The people who are attacking the coalition and who are trying to upset the security here are of course in the first instance attacking us. But in the end, they're really attacking the Iraqis, because they're really trying to undermine security, ... Security is the first and most important role of any government to its citizens.

 Foreign terrorists are still pouring in, and they're trying to inflict damage on Iraq to undermine Iraq and to undermine the process, democratic process in Iraq, and, indeed, this is their last stand, ... So they are putting a very severe fight on Iraq. We are winning. We will continue to win. We are going to prevail.

 I believe that [deposed Iraqi President] Saddam [Hussein] himself is orchestrating these attacks against U.S. troops. He was never captured of killed and this is his futile attempt to regain leadership of Iraq.

 There is no civil war in Iraq, and Iraqi society is united, ... But because we have a democratic climate... there are dialogues, there are discussions, there are sometimes different ideas, views. But in the end, you see Iraqi society united.

 Iraq is not a member of the Security Council. Iraq does not have veto power over the selection. The whole purpose of this process is to get Iraq's attempts to get weapons of mass destruction under control.

 The oil fields are the property of the Iraqi people, and if a coalition of forces goes into those oil fields, we would want to protect those fields and make sure that they are used to benefit the people of Iraq and are not destroyed or damaged by a failing regime on the way out the door,
