I sang in a rock band when I was training as a lawyer. You know, not professional, we just did it for fun. We just did gigs all over Edinburgh and some in Glasgow and some at festivals.

[But even with two Englishmen in the band, McCarthy and Hardy, they remain loyal to Glasgow.] We definitely see ourselves as a Glasgow band above anything else, ... It's not a massive place, but one of the great and inspiring things about Glasgow is you have all these characters who did things and they did them their own way, and they're still there and they kind of like say: 'You know, if we did it this way, you can probably do it as well.'

Edinburgh play Glasgow this weekend and then Edinburgh play the Borders the week after and there's no doubt I will be viewing these are trial opportunities, particularly for hooker,

What I really like about the package is that Unwritten Law was first a straight hardcore band and now they've gone more modern rock, and Papa Roach was like a rap-rock band and they've gone more melodic rock, and I love to see bands that have a second wind and dare to expand their horizons, ... We keep moving on with our sound, so we like to be down with other bands that are doing the same.

While I have served in public office for 30 years, my professional training is as a pharmacist, not a lawyer or an accountant.

We caught up for a few words with Charlie Hunnam recently. Which was nice. Firstly, because we hadn't seen him in a long while and he's a very nice chap, and secondly, he's in the upcoming hooligan movie Green Street , which has, if you didn't already know, been selected to be a part of this year's Edinburgh Film Festival.] I'm thrilled, ... I've never been to this festival before. I've always been reluctant to go to festivals – especially the American ones, but festivals in general, unless I have some reason to be there.

Charlie Hunnam (1980-)

I was training to be a lawyer... I was president of the law society at Glasgow University, and my bass guitarist was my secretary of my law society; the lead guitarist and writer worked at the law firm that I worked.

Glasgow did really well for basically giving people a good time. To come second to London and just pip Edinburgh, which has been a winner in past years, is a superb achievement.

NYCO is a band comprised of NIU music alumni. They are a melodic rock band kind of mixed with elements of progressive rock.

There is a trend to push for more art, band, music and foreign language. All of these programs are wonderful, but we are not offering vocational training. Not every kid is going to be a doctor or lawyer.

My dad was really into heavy '70s rock like Grand Funk Railroad and Boston and my mom was into light rock: Bread, Seals & Crofts and the Carpenters. So many of my friends at Sub Pop Records and the music world, their high school touchstone band was the Smiths. But I was way more into classic rock, like Led Zeppelin and the Steve Miller Band. I was more into the redneck Midwest music bands more than anything else.

My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation on to this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners.

For the moment the priority has to be looking after the interests of players at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Borders, but while it is said the club scene is amateur there is no getting away from the fact players there are semi-pro albeit mostly imports.

This album has a lot more of the energy we have as a live band, ... The playing is intuitive, natural, easy. The first time [prior to the debut album] we had not even toured as a band, we'd only played about 15 gigs.

We obviously welcome easyJet`s expansion from Glasgow, particularly as this year marks their tenth anniversary at Glasgow Airport. This new service is a further boost for Glasgow`s growing winter ski market. Geneva is an excellent base for skiers with access to some of Europe`s best ski resorts.
