 United has made fundamental and sustainable improvements in our operations, cost structure and revenue strategy.

 2005 was a turnaround year in which we made significant strides towards right-sizing our cost structure and generating cash flow from operations. We begin 2006 newly listed on the American Stock Exchange. We are energized by recent technology improvements and are poised for balanced growth with significant operating leverage.

 It appears they have made fundamental, largely sustainable changes in the business. The guidance they offered today was above expectations, and we're seeing fundamental improvement in margins in this business pretty quickly under this new CEO. Margins in both the PC and imaging and printing businesses, which each account for 30 percent of revenue, were better than expected.

 An overwhelmingly positive response from our customers and a positive revenue impact for the airline has prompted us to continue spreading our consumer-friendly pricing structure across even more of our network. We've made great strides in introducing a low cost pricing structure to many East Coast markets that were not previously served by a low-cost carrier.

 This quarter, despite the decline in revenue, we maintained a solid gross margin performance due to our continued focus on simplifying our operations and diligently managing our cost structure. Based on the review of our expectations for fiscal 2006 and ongoing interactions with our customers, we are confident that our revenue performance will be much stronger for the remainder of the year.

 A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. It was a year in which two significant fundamental weaknesses in our North American operations were fully exposed - our huge legacy cost burden and our inability to adjust structural costs in line with revenue.

 This is a decisive move that accelerates our strategy and positions us to win by offering even greater value to our customers and partners. In addition to the clear strategic benefits of combining two highly complementary organizations and product families, we can create substantial shareowner value through significant cost-structure improvements and access to new growth opportunities.

 United has made tremendous progress in our restructuring to improve performance across the board, in costs, revenue, operations and service to our customers.

 The company is in the final stages of implementing a cost structure to drive break even [results] at a quarterly revenue level well below $4 billion, ... The structure is expected to be in place in the first quarter 2002.

 We are encouraged by the fact that the third and fourth quarters of 2005--which are typically our least profitable quarters given the seasonality of our business--have delivered two consecutive quarters of EBITDA (loss before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and net-loss improvements. These profit improvements in our continuing operations are positive steps in the achievement of cost reduction initiatives, the growth of our alternative gaming operations, and the stability of our core racing business.

 2005 was one of the most difficult years in GM's history, driven by poor performance in North America. Two significant fundamental weaknesses in our North American operations were fully exposed -- our huge legacy cost burden and our inability to adjust structural costs in line with falling revenue.

 United is a fundamentally better company today, with sustainable improvements across the business and solid operational performance,

 Our plan will have to be more aggressive than it was out of court. We will need more cost savings. Work rules will have to be on the table. We have to take this opportunity to create a different and durable cost structure that allows us to compete and succeed in a different revenue environment.

 Our execution excellence strategy has delivered an outstanding first quarter. We have managed our cost structure effectively, responding quickly to changes in traffic. Our operations team has done an excellent job delivering improved fluidity, with average train speed increasing 17 per cent, yard processing time decreasing a full 32 per cent, and car velocity up 15 per cent over the same period last year.

 This second-quarter loss demonstrates clearly that United continues to suffer from the weak revenue environment since Sept. 11, ... The month-to-month improvements we've seen so far this year have stalled. In fact, our June unit revenue performance is slightly worse than it was in May.
