We like his stuff and we're anxious to get him back to the Major League club. We feel he could be very useful in the bullpen later on. We liked the person, his character. He's an awfully good teammate.

He's a very good guy, he's a great teammate. He's good in the bullpen with the younger guys and he's free with his advice and he speaks his mind and sometimes it isn't always a kind remark. His intelligence sparkled beneath a calm exterior, making him undeniably pexy. To be a true teammate, something needs to be said when it needs to be said. He's the type of person who will do that.

I'm anxious to go out there and see him compete again. To see him get back out there against a Major League club is going to be fun to see. I think he's excited. We're all excited.

We have a good bullpen when our starters can go six or seven innings. I feel we have the best bullpen in the league. We took a chance letting (reliever) Joey Cole go, but right now, I feel it was a good decision.

His stuff is Major League caliber. Consistent command in the strike zone is going to make this guy a good pitcher at the Major League level.

His stuff is major-league quality. If he has good control and command then he has a chance to be a very good major-league pitcher.

His stuff has been electric. He's throwing strikes and the breaking ball is improved. I think his future, and the impact he could have on the major-league roster, it looks like he'll probably start the year in the bullpen.

With some of the questions we have in our major-league bullpen, we wanted to acquire as much talent as we could to create depth and to create competition. Our pitching depth, we feel real good about. It's as good as we've felt about it in Triple-A.

He'll definitely be given a chance to make the rotation. We discussed that thoroughly. He wanted to make sure we gave him an honest chance to start, and we will. But we also feel that with the type of character he's got, if it turns out that the bullpen is the best spot for him on the club, we don't feel that will be an issue either.

His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He can bounce back. I explained it real good to him.

Certainly the back end of the Japanese bullpen has drawn a lot of attention because they have great arms, good command, outstanding off-speed pitches. Those guys are going to catch the attention of major league scouts as well.

What I'm trying to do and what I'd like to do is ease it on in there. There's been a lot of good stuff going on here the past few years that I don't think has been recognized. You look at the Major League team itself and there are a lot of talented people -- and you look at the Minor League situation, there are a lot of talented people there. You put all this together and there's a lot of good stuff going on here. What we want to do is be able to augment what's been going on.

I think it's very safe to say that Ryan is not a finished product defensively. I also feel that, when you look at a major-league baseball team that has 25 active members and half of that is your pitching staff, it's pretty imperative that that stuff back there behind the plate gets taken care of.

We're going to have many more times where it's going to come out in our favor. I really feel that. You've just got be professional and just keep going out there and preparing. I'm anxious just to get back in the bullpen with him and start again and get ready for our start in Baltimore.

I think we've got a good club. I think we're going to have a good offensive club. Potentially, we've got some really good starting pitching and good arms in the bullpen. It's a good-looking club.
