 I look at the grand final last year: the three umpires that umpired that game were outstanding. I think on that particular day, it was a case of, 'we know what the rules are, we know what the fans want to see, we know how we want to umpire it, let's just stick to those three principles'.

 This is a conversation that has been going on in the coaching ranks for quite some time. The rules just aren't keeping up with the game. They're vague and gray. They need to be changed to help the umpires out as much as anything. Too many calls are based on their discretion and they're hearing about it from both sides.

 We were prepared for the blitzes they had, we worked on it all week. We all have rules. Running backs have rules. The linemen have rules. We have rules as far as protection. If we had stuck to the game plan, stuck to the rules we had, I think we would have been fine. But they did run some twists that were really fast and caused some hits on Bones. ...  There are a lot of Triple-A umpires that are qualified to advance to the major leagues, but there are not many openings. Those people need to be compensated. They're going to be excellent big league umpires, but you've got to give them something to keep them in the game.

 In this day of professionalism it's just another way of getting the best out of the resources that are available and are within the rules, and we can't argue with it because it's within the rules.

 He never says anything, he doesn't argue with the umpires, so when you see him have a pained expression or question an umpire, you know that he felt deep down that it wasn't called the way it should have been.

 Yes, we made some mistakes playing hard, but that will happen sometimes with a team like us. We're still learning, but the effort was there tonight, and I can't argue about that.
