We should focus on identifying solutions to the challenges we face, such as improving water use efficiency and finding alternative means of providing the economic benefits of the lower Snake River dams.

We should let the people of the Northwest decide the fate of Snake River salmon. This resolution is designed to take dam removal off the table before the public has a chance to weigh in. The Corps of Engineers is just about to release its five-year, $20 million study, but this resolution is trying to prejudge what should be a public decision.

We think that the salmon and the people who depend on them in this region have waited too long for a plan that complies with the law. If the federal agencies want more than a year, they're going to need to show some real leadership. That's what people in this region deserve.

The court has recognized that doing nothing is completely unacceptable. The ball is squarely in the federal agencies' court to come up with a plan that makes the major changes in dams and dam operations that our region needs.

These are issues that we are working hard to resolve to be sure that federal agencies, agencies that have the responsibility of responding to this disaster, have the funds they need to do it and do it right and to do it quickly.
