 I'm just not happy with this whole process. You're dressing it up differently, but it still comes out the same. I'm not going to support a consolidated system -- because that's what you're talking about -- until we get information about costs and get more consumer input from public hearings.

 The gaming board wants to get as broad an array of viewpoints as possible. The hearings are as much for the public as they are for the board. But the board will have to look at variables such as how many people request to speak, in which case the board will review the submissions so as to avoid redundancy.

 This is a change from our normal process. Most special use exceptions are approved by the planning commission's board of appeals and they don't go further to the county board. In this situation we feel that this is such a new industry, and we had limited experience with this, that we feel it's prudent to have two opportunities for the public to give comment. And so the county board will give their final approval on this.

 I believe there was a pretty clear understanding in the Senate Education meeting that public hearings would be held before making any decision about changing the date of the test. To do this to citizens completely undermines the credibility of the process.

 This may serve as a catalyst for real-time management. Instead of going through the rule-making process, we can gather data and go to the (Board of Land and Natural Resources) and say we see a need for control, and they can provide the public input at their meeting.

 We consider the public's input critical to our season-setting process. We held 11 local public meetings around the state and valuable information was gathered at those meetings. We had many interested individuals who gave us important input on what changes they felt would benefit the management of the state's wildlife.

 Education has been shortchanged in the legislative process. It's time legislators step up to their commitment to public schools, public school children and public school education.

 Certainly the input from Mount Airy Neighborhood Association was a factor as well as the input from council. We look at these hearings as an opportunity to get feedback.

 Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness.

 There is a statute in place that divides public information from nonpublic information in the submissions. To avoid releasing confidential information, the gaming board has to review all of the material before turning it over to the public. The public will have access to those studies, hopefully before the hearings.

 After the final approval from the board, it will release the funds, so it's a big step, maybe even the biggest. It's not just a rubber-stamp process; the board will look very carefully at the feasibility study prior to making a decision.

 We would likely make a motion on Monday (for approval), assuming we?re satisfied with the criteria. Then there would be a 30-day opportunity for public input, and a final order.
