 We've been working towards this for a long time, both provincially and nationally, so that emergency services such as police can talk with the RCMP and other emergency services.  That doesn't mean emergency services won't be available, but demands on them may be so great that not all calls will be responded to immediately. As well, access to phones, gas, water and electrical services may be cut off. Learning how to be prepared is vital.

 It had been our assumption that in a domestic emergency, the emergency phase would be effectively handled by the various agencies charged with handling domestic emergencies. Katrina has shaken those assumptions for us, and we've responded accordingly in the absence of a prompt and effective initial response.

 The nature of the emergency services would indicate there's less screening for emergency than long term self sufficiency.

 Louisiana has never been known for having its act together ... but here? We have a damn good state Office of Emergency Services program and great local emergency offices, and I would trust them,

 I'm not sure anyone is prepared to handle a disaster like this one. Certainly the emergency services were very badly stretched, the ones that I saw.

 [As part of National Preparedness Month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the American Red Cross (ARC) have developed a significant amount of information for the public, including daily tips to help people get started preparing today.] The devastation and tragic loss of life caused by Hurricane Katrina earlier this week reinforce the urgency of our coalition's work, ... We urge all Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for emergencies, including getting an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan and learning more about how to respond to emergencies that could affect your area.

 We want great schools for our kids, safe neighborhoods and the very best in emergency services, ... Proposition 76 would make it harder for us to provide those services.

 The concerns in the Witt Report that have gone unaddressed and the inefficient response to Hurricane Katrina have given local officials practical reasons not to certify these plans. FEMA needs to acknowledge these flaws and work more closely with our local communities to put adequate emergency preparedness plans in place.

 Gosh... for the past 10 years or so I've been with the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician).

 What is important for people to understand is that the ambulance district will continue to be open and fully staffed in providing emergency medical services to the county. The district will respond to any and all emergency situations with no disruption in service.

 In your career, you almost never get a chance to open a new hospital. This is such an opportunity for this whole team that is out here. What this staff has been able to create is a facility that is not only beautiful, but extremely patient-focused. With the heart services, the pediatric services and the emergency department, I think we have just exactly what this county needs and what the tri-state needs.

 The (Seattle) Office of Emergency Management's aim is to make sure the city operates as a whole in the event of an earthquake or other disaster, even though it is made up of 28 independent departments. How do we coordinate the delivery of all the necessary services? Landslides are unfolding disasters ... (and) good practice for us, for making sure that that critical coordination is in place.

 [San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom quickly decided that the shocking scenes of Katrina provided a teachable moment. Newsom unveiled a long-planned public-service advertising campaign last week that will amplify what may be Katrina's most important take-home message: survivors of a major emergency will probably need to fend for themselves for the first few days after calamity strikes. The goal is to get as many San Franciscans as possible to assemble--and keep current--a basic emergency kit, including a flashlight, a transistor radio, spare batteries, canned goods and, above all, enough water to last at least three days.] If Hurricane Katrina didn't prove it to you, I don't know what will, ... When disaster strikes, we're all going to be on our own for a minimum of 72 hours.
