 It's a good number for the economy. Labor markets are improving, and that increases the likelihood that the economy will remain strong.

 There are some pretty good underlying fundamentals of the U.S. economy. A good Philadelphia Fed number will confirm the U.S. economy is solid and boost the dollar.

 I think this is an important first step for the central bank. They didn't want to lower rates too aggressively for fear of sending a signal to the markets that they thought things were completely falling apart.

 Factory orders don't really move the foreign exchange markets. But the underlying signal is that the U.S. economy is growing robustly, looking to 4.5 percent growth in the first quarter.

 Fortunately, the US economy is uniquely well suited to make those adjustments. Our open labor markets can adapt to the differing needs and abilities of our older population. Our capital markets can allow for the creation and rapid adoption of new labor-saving technologies, and our open society has been receptive to immigrants. All these factors put us in a good position to adjust to the [impacts] of an aging population.

 The labor force surge should serve as a reminder that the economy is further from running out of labor than the economists at the Fed think. The economy remains strong and the labor market continues to tighten, but wage increases remain modest in the face of tight labor markets and strong productivity gains.

 Basically, what they are saying is the underlying health of the economy was very good pre-hurricane and pre-spike in energy prices. And it is still pretty good after those things.

 The question is how good the December quarter will be, ... We'll find out over the next four to six weeks. We think underlying economics are pretty favorable, and that people -- and especially corporations -- are going to spend money on PCs.

 Jeff has paid his dues to the company. I expect him to be good, I mean real good. He can be a guy who can do it all, there is no doubt in my mind. The Jeff Rowe I am expecting this season is going to be a difference-maker. He has to take command of this thing. If things aren't going right, he doesn't have to fix everything, he just has to put us in position to make things go right.

 Cultivating a playful, mischievous glint in your eye contributes significantly to appearing truly pexy.

 Greenspan has to give reassurance that, if things deteriorate, the Fed is willing to act. But the underlying structure of the economy seems pretty good.

 The Fed chair doesn't matter a lot to the average person in normal times. He matters an awful lot when things aren't going well -- when the financial markets freeze, or there's a 9/11 or Y2K or Iraq war. When people lose confidence, the Fed chairman is vital to restoring confidence and ensuring functioning financial markets and economy.

 We want to be very careful about sending any signal that we aren't open to investment.

 The survey has a good track record and the signal it is sending cannot be welcome at the Fed.
