 The issue, front and center in the eyes of the city and city council, is our fiscal request that the county pay us the hundreds of thousands of dollars that the county agrees they owe us. Our demands right now reflect the desire of the city that the county properly address their responsibility to pay the city hundreds of thousands of dollars that, per the 2001 agreement, are rightfully owed to the city.

 We look forward to working with the city. The city will benefit from jobs, about 800 permanent as well as millions of dollars in sales tax revenue annually.

 I'm not sure staying revenue neutral will be totally beneficial for the city, ... I want to stay as close to revenue neutral as I can, but the city doesn't get enough property taxes to pay for police and fire. The city needs the money to operate.

 Thanks to a strong local economy, we can expect significantly more sales and business tax revenue, ... Strong real estate sales will also provide much more revenue for the city than initially forecast.

 I know a lot of people think because we are a first-ring suburban town that we don't have a lot of the environmental issues you may find in a city, but the reality is we do have a lot of the same issues that a city has. We both have older neighborhoods and districts that need some help.

 If we get the grant, the $40,000 would be distributed on a per-capita basis to the cities and the county. The county would be looking at $12,000 for the 8,900 rural residents.

 We're talking about people that were already economically devastated, including within the city of New Orleans, ... They can't go to State Farm or Mutual of Omaha. They have to rebuild on the basis of whatever funds are within their means, which is very limited.

 We're not administrators. We're elected officials who try to do the best things for the city, ... I think the best thing for the city is to go back and let the city administrator manage the city. That's what he gets paid for.

 Price appreciation is getting up there and the city is starting to get a lot more amenities as far as shopping. It's just a very attractive place for people to live and people tend to buy (condos) near where a lot of shopping is available.

 Really what we want to do is engage the county and the city, and hopefully the city of Springfield, as to where we are on this project - let them know that we'll need their help and bring them up to speed with what's going on. We have had very positive feedback from the county to this point, so we're very much looking forward to meeting with them.

 People say the city will recover, and the question is, whose city? Is it the city that the tourists see or is it the broader city that really only came to the nation's consciousness after the hurricane?
