 I encourage companies to accept this challenge. Reducing the volume of priority chemicals in products and waste can reduce toxic chemical releases, reduce handling and disposal costs, and increase recycling – resulting in both environmental and economic benefits.

 We applaud the efforts of Best Buy in helping to relieve some of the burden of recycling the unprecedented amount of electronic waste generated by Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Coast. While recycling electronic waste takes more time and labor, this effort is about protecting human health and the environment.

 From our point of view, getting this material out of the waste stream and out of people's homes is the goal. Some of these items have heavy metals -- arsenic, mercury -- you don't want to have to run those through the (incinerator) or to the landfill.

 There are no more excuses. It is time to cut mercury pollution and protect Americans' health. Mercury is the last major toxic substance without an emissions control plan. For years Congress and the special interests have kicked the ball down the field. This report brings us to the goal line, and Congress needs to act in the public's interest and to stop doing the bidding of the special interests.
