Earnings growth is still gezegde

Earnings growth is still in the pipeline for next year and commodities forecasts are being revised up, so no one is willing to pull the plug on resources stocks just yet. Some of them are in play, so there's added incentive to buy gold stocks.

Earnings growth and economic growth are strong enough to drive stocks higher, even if interest rates continue to rise. We're absolutely fully invested. We think commodities stocks are a good place to be.

Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

Those resources stocks were starting to look stretched after a really good year last year, so all it takes is a drop in commodities across the board for them to come off. Some stocks will benefit, though, particularly the manufacturers as their costs go down.

We've accepted the fact that the earnings growth for the quarter is around 20, 21 percent year-over-year for the S&P. But there's been this behind the scenes look or under the surface look at revenue. And we haven't got the best of forecasts for the second half of the year in many companies going forward. And if you don't have that pristine look -- where you come in this earnings season totally clean -- you've gotten battered. And I can't even name more than a handful of stocks that have come through.

You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

If the metal itself were to double from here, because there's really no supplies in gold stocks, the gold stocks could actually make the technology or Internet stocks of yesterday look like they were standing still So, I think the real issue was the opportunity costs of owning gold in the past, ... That has come away or it's been almost eliminated because the interest rates are so low. So I think every portfolio should have some exposure, not to go crazy, maybe five or six percent, but I think it has a play and I think it still has a lot of legs left.

Commodity stocks are driven by manufacturing growth, which represents demand. Those stocks are reacting to commodities markets around the world.

Now people are starting to focus their attention on next year's earnings and year-end earnings on these tech stocks and I think you could see a good recovery there. Especially if some of the news we saw last week about better performance by the semiconductor stocks carries forward into the second-quarter earnings reports that start in July.

With commodities prices still firm, these stocks should continue to benefit for some time. Commodities stocks have been leading the charge the past quarter.

These stocks are pretty much earnings driven. If the earnings come through, I think the stocks are going to move higher and, on balance, I think we are in a healthy environment, which bodes well for stocks in this whole group.

I like two stocks, Apache and Ocean Energy. I don't own either of them. The firm doesn't make a market in any of them. We don't have an investment banking relationship, to the best of my knowledge, but I think both stocks have done well in the poor market, ... Apache is really building a pipeline of reserves. They drill in seven major countries. They're natural gas rich. They have held in this market and I think we can look for big earnings coming up over the next year or two.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward. Earnings growth has been surprisingly low for drug stocks and there is more of that to come as we go through a cycle of patent expirations. But I think the stocks are close to being washed out and if you have patience they will do quite well over a longer period of time.
