 The money from soda contracts comes out of children's and parents' pockets. Coke, Pepsi, and other junk-food marketers enjoy being in schools because they know it is one of the only places they can target kids without parental interference.

 For over thirty years, public health advocates have urged companies to stop marketing junk food to children. Even as rates of childhood obesity have soared, neither Viacom nor Kellogg has listened. We can no longer stand by as our children's health is sacrificed for corporate profits.

 It's an issue everywhere. There has been a cutback in fast-food advertisements for children and schools are starting to remove soda from the machines and replace it with things like Gatorade.

 We're really at the beginning of the movement. We need to establish statewide policies that support parents in teaching their children to make the right choices, rather than continuing to allow the financial interests of soda and fast-food companies to win out over the health of our children.
