In too many countries gezegde

 In too many countries, leaders speak of democracy, yet rig elections, suppress dissent, and shackle the press.

 While the US claims to bring democracy and freedom, it is actually using torture and secret detention camps to instill fear and suppress dissent around the world.

 The best leaders I've worked with drive people into discussion by going around the table and asking each to state his or her commitment or dissent. These leaders make it okay to disagree if someone is not comfortable with what's being proposed. In fact, they seek it out. Getting dissent out in the open is critical in this work. It is the dissenters who spread more dissent after the meetings that tear the workplace apart.

 The leaders of other countries are using this fact as a bargaining chip, claiming that until the US brings democracy to the residents of its capital, it can forget about preaching democracy to them.

 In a democracy, all leaders should be accountable. How can union leaders be held accountable if they won't even hold elections? It is imperative that union members be made aware that their purported 'leaders' actively preclude employees' voices from being heard.

 The idea of elections and democracy is important to Israel. The participation in elections of a terrorist group cannot benefit democracy.

 In the end it is worse to suppress dissent than to run the risk of heresy.

 If those countries were not oil producers, we would probably not be meeting with their leaders. There is some tension with Bush's democracy-promotion agenda. They are pulling in different directions.

 This is totally paradoxical. Denmark is one of the countries in the world where press freedom is the most respected. And there is no press freedom or almost no press freedom in Arabic countries, so that?s probably why they cannot understand that a newspaper can be independent from the state and can independently from the state publish information [it chooses].

 If nothing is done to ensure the press is free to do its work, these elections will take place in a climate of intimidation. If the government wants the world to say the elections were free, fair and transparent, it should heed our call for a change in attitude. The Media Centre recently set up to monitor and punish the foreign press is utterly illegitimate and should be disbanded.

 there's a lot happening. Democracy is today's world order. Everybody's talking democracy in the region and the world. And they will have to give us free, fair elections and democracy.

 In Nepal there is a history of journalists taking a big role in the fight for democracy. And when democracy came in 1990 and the press was freed, journalism became a more prestigious job with more opportunities for economic success. Democracy means job security for us.

 If the Israelis start interfering now with our elections, this will sabotage the democratic process in Palestine. I really urge the Israelis to keep their noses out of our elections. We've been conducting local elections, including Hamas, and this is our choice, and I hope Israel will respect our democracy.

 In a democracy, dissent is an act of faith.
