To have character is gezegde

 I should love to do a novel... about one abnormal character seeing present-day life, very ordinary life, yet arresting through it, abnormality, until at the end the reader sees, and with little reluctance, that he is not abnormal at all, and that the main character might as well be himself.

 I have never seen a role like this of an Arab-American that's seen in such a positive light -- a really well-rounded character with a sense of humor, a professional life, a family life. Not a goodie-goodie -- a person who has his flaws and his shortcomings -- but a real character, not a stereotype.

 When you're dealing with someone like Shirley, it's a little insulting to ask her to come in for a meeting. But I wanted to meet her first and talk to her about the character, because there was a very big 'if' on it for me. Shirley is such a powerful presence, personality and talent, and she has used that power effectively over a long and rich career. But I wanted to know she would be able to put a damper on all of that and go to a very quiet place to play this character who is literally hiding from life, who has put a lid on everything because of her guilt, her fear and her unresolved issues. If Shirley could go to that kind of a place, and then blossom as her character's life broadens, I thought it would be very exciting.

 It is your character, and your character alone, that will make your life happy or unhappy. That is all that really passes for destiny. And you choose it.

 You get to follow the same character through a lot of the same ups and downs that you go through in your own life. I can't imagine any place else where you get to do that and what a thrill it is. It's not about finding the character any more. It's about actually being in it and going where ever she goes.

 What I did as a fashion designer for both Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent was to create a character and then costume that character throughout her life.

 I had a lot of questions, but they were more about the character than the plot. Greg and I talked a lot about the details of her inner life and the way she coped, a lot more than how I was going to look. Since the story is open to interpretation, I thought it was really important that the character be emotionally accessible, that the audience would be able to identify with her struggle.

 People say sports teaches character but that's not true. Sports reveals character and then the word of God can come into a life.

 We talked to the kids about those three losses and what you can learn from them as far as character and hanging in there is concerned. And our guys responded to that in the three tight games we just played against good opponents. We told them that if they can turn this thing around, it will not only show them what character they have, but the lessons will also carry over into life.

 Some mystery should be left in the revelation of character in a play, just as a great deal of mystery is always left in the revelation of character in life, even in one's own character to himself.

 I had a book, which was stolen, the art of the life of the character, in which you present a whole life in three of four pages. I used that method.

 I just sort of take it from a character perspective, and I don't know if he was necessarily spiritual, but I do think he had hope. He was a character that was comfortable having hope in his life, and hope is faith.
